Subaru to Unveil New 4-Cylinder Boxer Engine This Year
Sep 01, 2010 - 6:06 PM - by AutoGuide.com

For the first time in two decades, Subaru is expected to debut an all-new 4-cylinder boxer engine later this year, which will be used in most models in its lineup to help improve fuel economy.

According to a report by Japan's Nikkei business daily, the new engine will be between 2.0- and 2.5-liters with improved fuel economy by roughly 10 percent and will be used in everything from the Legacy to the Impreza. First, however, it will launch in the Forester. The new engine is also slated to get a CVT transmission – a notable improvement over the 4-speed auto-box in the Forrester and Impreza.

Subaru has confirmed that a new engine is being prepped to debut but no details have been provided.

It's possible that the new engine could use both direct-injection and a start-stop system, two technologies that were showcased on the Hybrid Tourer Concept – a hybrid model that Subaru unveiled at last year's Tokyo Auto Show. Subaru is also expected to deliver a hybrid model in 2012 based on an existing vehicle.

New Subaru Ad Promotes Brand's Safety; Captures "First Time Out" Driving Moment
Aug 09, 2010 - 11:49 AM - by AutoGuide.com

We all have that one commercial that makes us tear up. We may not admit it, but every time it comes on, we stop what we're doing and reach for a tissue. A new Subaru commercial falls into this category, and if you're a parent, it will tug on your heartstrings more than just a little bit.

The TV ad, called "Baby Driver," features a father handing over the car keys to his daughter as she sets off to drive alone for the first time. If you've ever watched your son or daughter pull out of the driveway for their first solo ride, we bet this ad will make you choke up. (Interesting side note: the two girls who star in the ad are real-life sisters and the "dad" is the real-life father to both girls.)

The ad starts with a six-year-old girl behind the wheel of a Subaru Legacy, while her father gives her the "safety talk" through the passenger side window. When he passes her the keys, we see that it's really been a 16-year-old about to take her first ride alone, even though her Dad still sees her as his "little girl."

And in a situation where life imitates art, Andy Lyons, who plays the concerned father, is experiencing this moment in his own life. "As father to both the girls, portraying those complex emotions on-screen was not a stretch for me. Having my first daughter, Lanna reach driving age and knowing that my second, Georgie, will be there all too soon, I understand the anxiety of handing over the keys for the first time."

This ad is meant to spotlight the inherent safety of Subaru vehicles and the time in a teen's life when they are responsible enough to take the family vehicle out on the road, as it tries to authentically portray that big moment. "When we found this family we threw out the script," said Kevin Mayer, director of marketing communications, Subaru of America, Inc. "We simply asked the dad, what would you tell your daughter before she pulled away? The dad took it from there and he was perfect."

Watch the video at the link below, and feel free to well up (we promise not to tell).

2011 Subaru WRX STI Launches With "Get More Gs" Ad Campaign [video]
Jul 21, 2010 - 11:24 AM - by administrator

After spending a lot of time focusing on its mainstream models like the Legacy and Forrester, Subaru is ready to put the spotlight back on its high performance models. For 2011, Subaru has released an updated WRX STI model and while it doesn't look all that new, there are a lot of updates – plus Subaru has brought back the STI sedan.

While there are no changes to the 305-hp engine, other updates include a revised suspension setup with a lowered ride height and new pillow-ball bushings in front and stiffer bushings for the rear subframe. Subaru says these updates improve camber and toe stiffness. New springs feature higher spring rates with a 15.6 percent increased stiffness in front and 53 percent increase in stiffness in the rear. Thicker sway bars also help improve handling, while new 18-inch wheels weight a total of 17.6 lbs less than the previous model's wheels. In addition, the 2011 STI models also get exterior updates – although none but a true Suby nut is likely to notice. The changes include a modified bumper with sharper edges, a new lip spoiler, larger front grille as well as larger bumper openings. The sedan model also gets new, flared rear fenders.

The result of all those changes is incredible with a 7:55 lap time around the Nurburgring – a record for 4-door vehicles, besting even the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

To help put the focus on the STI, Subaru has released a series of commercials featuring regular folks getting rides by rally driver Dave Mirra. the ad campaign is titled "Get More Gs." Watch the videos and we're sure you'll see why
