Angry 2012 Nav System stinks

I have been driving my new Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited now for two months and it's about the best car I've had. However.... The Nav system sucks. It really, really, really sucks and I think I've wasted 1,500 on a worthless and possibly unsafe gadget. So much so that I've started carrying my Garmin Nuvi.

1. I know Subaru is concerned with safety, but blanking out almost every conceivable option to reroute the nav system while the car is moving is lunacy. As a matter of fact, we had to stop to the side in the middle of I-81 in Virginia, in a snow storm, with trailer trucks wizzing by us inches away, just so the options would "unblank". My right-seat companion finally pulled out my Nuvi from the back seat and we were able to get to where we wanted. I don't mind a warning or a legal disclaimer telling me that wrapping myself on a tree is my fault, but to make the entire system unworkable is plainly stupid.

2. The Nav system is dismally out-of-date by at least two years. Driving from Washington DC to Snowshoe Mountain Resort, WV, major highway construction that has been completed and opened - 4 lane highways - aren't there, even though my two Garmin Nuvis were updated over two years ago.

3. The voice control is at best, elementary. At worst, tedious and unsafe

Can someone point a workaround?

Yes it just plain sucks. If you read any review on the Outback's Nav system since it came out in 2010 there is pretty much a concensus that it stinks.

Not sure on workarounds, but I have not read about any.

Do the hack! It will at least make the system useable.

Out of date by over 8 years! My street is over 8 years old and it still doesn't show it. Oh the body of land that I live on has been here for over 40. Great car lousy Nav.

...this is an interesting read. I thought that they were supposed to cure all the NAV ills with the 2012...guess the lockout was not one of their concerns....thank god...or who ever did it...for the NAV override hack. I did it, not so much for the NAV featurs but more so to be able to get at my playlists on my ipod.

I read in another post that they updated the Nav system a few months into the 2012 build dates, so some newer 2012's may have a different system. Not sure if it's improved.

When I first test drove a 2012 OB with the Nav system, the salesman and I were having difficulty even turing on the radio. All the reviews of the Nav system are negative which is one of the big reasons I opted for no Nav (cost was another and the fact that my phone's Google Maps works just fine was the other).

Thumbs down Nav system sucks

Just talked to my dealer and gave them an earful. The Nav system has undergone a few changes but the lockout is still there and the information is as outdated as it ever was.
