I searched and can't find any threads on this --

After a good rain when I open the tailgate on by 2010 I have water dripping sometimes running out of the trim around the back window. It is from the tailgate itself, it is not due to the seal around the gate. could it be the rear window? or the third break light? Has anyone had this before, I'm wondering where to start. Would this be covered under the 7yr/100k Gold warranty, I'm just shy of 39k and have owned my car since February. This does not happen every time it rains and I did not notice it when I washed the car.

If the dealer fails to fix it, I would take all the interior trim of the gate, sit inside and have someone spray the gate with water so that you may be able to see where water is coming in. The glass is glued in so a leak there would be rare so I would look at where the plastic trim below the window and lights are attached to the gate. YMMV

Same here.

I also have the same problem on my 2010 OB. Green color though. LOL. But it seems so drip from my right side trim on the interior when I open the door after a rain. Sometimes theres a puddle of water from the leak after a rain. I just can't seem to locate the cause of the leak either. I hope someone can give us and answer.

Ditto

Same problem with my 2010 outback...usually after a storm. Recently pulled upper center plastic trim (held by two plastic clips..use care) and right side internal segments were filled with water. This is why when you lift tailgate water drips/pours from right side. Much searching around window glass and seal but couldn't find source of leak. Snapped trim back in..now waiting for someone to solve the problem. Bet this is more widespread than we think!

Recently experienced the same problem. It has been really dry in Colorado and we are now in monsoon season. Well I noticed that there was water dripping from the back upper corners like others have stated. After reading this I pulled off the upper surround (only a couple of clips hold it on) and had my wife spray around the light. There it was water coming in. I removed the high center break light with a socket and extension from inside with my fingers no wrench needed to turn the screws, pulled it out, which is not that easy to do and found water all around and under the foam gasket. I got out some black RTV and made a new seal. Hope I don't have to replace that bulb anytime soon :) easy job but I do believe this needs to be brought to Subaru's attention as there are a lot of electrical connections in that rear door and could corrode in the rust belt.

Mine is fixed, third brake light

I had that exact same leak in the rear from the hatchback lid, I took it to a dealer took them 2 days to find the leak had to do with the third brake light. They removed the brake light and resealed it remounted it in place and after several hard rains and my best efforts to cause it to leak can say for sure it is fixed. My car is a 2010 I bought as a cert. used and bought the 7yr / 100k warranty on I had it fixed a month ago with 41k on it and they did cover it 100%

I wonder if there is a service bulletin on this yet, seams to be wide spreed perhaps a future recall as I agree it could cause many other issues. I have since remover all the molding to install a backup camera and I see no issue as far as rust in the tailgate Thank God.

I have a 2011 Outback and just noticed the tail gate leak. Seems like the water is coming in on the top right (when facing the front of the car) and the majority of the water is accumulating on a seam where they connect the horizontal and vertical interior plastic panels framing the window. We have had the car in huge rain storms before and not noticed this problem, but now even with a moderate rain we are getting some water into the back. Will ask the dealer about it next month at our maintenance.

Just went through the car wash, driving back to work noticed the rear wiper wasn't wiping off a spray of water from the middle of the rear window.
Parked it at work opened the tailgate and found the water on the inside of the rear window. Sure looks like it came through the top mounted brake light.
Great...

So my 2010 is now having this problem. I'm getting water dripping from the trim so I'm thinking it's definitely the 3rd brake light. Since I'm at 89K I'm well out of warranty so I'm going to try to take care of this myself.

Can any one chime in to as what has successfully stopped the leak. Want to make sure I have everything in hand before pulling it all apart. If all else fails I'll try some RTV and see if it works.

I just had water pour out of trim in hatch when I opened trunk. Noted some water on rear window as well. Looks like i am going to have to see about the third brake light. Car isn't even 3 years old yet, but I am at 38k so no warranty. Dang, first problem out of warranty. Wish it had happen a month or two ago! Is general consensus that rtv works best or has anyone replaced whatever oem gasket is there?

The dealer replaced my gasket under my extended warranty almost a year ago, still no leak. RTV could cause a problem if you ever need to replace the light.

Perhaps someone have a blow-up of the hatch components, I wouldn't think the gasket cost would be a killer and it's not hard to remove the trim, I did so to install my own rear camera.

Just had this happen on my 2011 today. Took the trim from the top of the hatch and it was wet inside. This is above the window, so the leak couldn't have been from the window seal. My initial plan was to use some rope caulk to reseal around the high mounted stop light assembly, but I didn't have that and didn't have time to make a hardware store run. I did have some window and door weather seal on a roll. It was too wide, so I cut it in half. It was also pretty thick, but compresses well. I scraped all the old gasket off that I could and used Goo Gone and alcohol to clean up the plastic surface as much as possible (including around the threaded mounting studs) and applied the weatherstripping. It's all back together now so we'll see if that works. It might be a short term fix but next time I'll know better what I need.
