Now up to 25.8 overall. Much improved in general.
At elevation, the subaru absolutely despises going above 67-68 mph. Drives great but the mileage is terrible, absolutely horrid. Driving mountain roads between 45 and 65 mph I see 30+ regularly on 10+ mile stretches. Of note I use 85 octane exclusively. I am at 6k feet and higher. |

Colder weather means the 'fuel enrichment circuit' dumps fuel in during warm up. Around 28 on mix of in town and highway cruising at 65 or more.

Just completed a 650 mile Thanksgiving trip in Michigan and Ohio. Averaged 28 mpg for the distance in a new 3.6R with 2 people, 2 dogs, plus the cargo area was full of trip stuff and food. Outside temp was 30-50 degrees and had 32 psi in the Michelin Defenders. Speeds were 45-70. Very pleased with the mileage and performance. Been getting only 22 mpg around town, so it was nice it see it so good on the highway.

Just had a weekend highway run of 940km (564 miles) two fill ups, one at each end of the trip. Avg mileage for both fills was 32.8 mpg (impirial gallon) on fuelly calculation. Round up and that is an even 33. Pretty darn good for having snowtires on and colder weather.
My best is still just over 36. I expect a huge drop off as the temp drops below 0 C (32 F) for the winter months...time will tell.

Count me in on the "unimpressed-with-2013-mpg" group. Our 2013 Outback 2.5i CVT is 3-4mpg less efficient than our old 2010 Outback 2.5i CVT.
My wife commutes about 100 miles a day, so we are well-aware of gas mileage & keep track of it accordingly. Her 2010 Outback 2.5i CVT Premium + Sunroof + All Weather reliably got 29-31mpg for her daily commute, depending on the weather. Flat, mid-western 65-70mph commute, day-in, day-out. On long 100% highway trips in moderate temps, we could hit 32mpg, which was awesome. The EPA highway sticker on that was 29mpg. With 60K on the odometer this summer, we traded in the 2010 on a 2013 Outback 2.5i CVT Limited. Love the upgrade, except for the MPG. Its EPA highway MPG sticker says 30mpg. But on the same commute, under similar conditions, it's only getting between 25 and 27mpg. We have yet to ever crack 30, which is something we could easily do on the old Outback. We keep hoping that the engine just needs time to break-in, but we're up to 11,000 miles now and it's still not where I think it should be, nor has it improved since it had 8 miles on it when we drove it off the lot. We've tried turning the auto climate control AC off (because our old Premium had manual climate controls, so we didn't run the AC as much), but it makes no difference. This is running 87 octane, 10% ethanol gas. Same gas on both cars. Literally the same gas station pumps. Dealer says that there's nothing wrong nor anything they can do. We still love the car, but are disappointed that the MPG seems to have taken a significant hit when it should have actually improved. |

Winter weather/temps have crushed my mpgs. As expected about 3-4 mpg drop. 27+mpg mixed average with flirts in the 30s over the summer. Now 25mpg is a good tank.
Throw in the purchase of a utility trailer and some hauling planned over the next couple weeks, my fuely stats definitely won't be pretty. |
