You've got the right idea. You do want to remove the headliner, but not to install Dynamat. Look for a good acoustic material like Bonded Logic Ultratouch: Bonded Logic - Construction Products - UltraTouch Radiant Barrier This is the same stuff car makers put under your carpets. It's only 1/2" thick and very light. It should easily fit between the roof and headliner.

...okay, I have read their stuff...why is it any better than something like dynamat? They both do the same thing. The only difference is that this stuff is cotton.

Did this in my STI with generic dynamat knock off. The roof has fairly large open areas without support... it absolutely helps to have a vibration damper on these. No need to go nuts, just a strip down each open row did plenty good.

No, they don't. Dynamat does not block or absorb sound. It stops panels from resonating and creating their own noise, but it does not block existing noise from entering the car. Cotton batting DOES absorb sound and quite well. That's why you find it under almost any carpeting in your car already.

Ideally you would install both, but for different purposes.

That is good to know. I have also heard that in California you can buy house insulation made from cotton/recycled denim etc. Same concept and insulates too.

High end custom audio shops will put dyna mat down then lay the cotton over it as mentioned they serve different purposes etc.

i didn't take any pics when i removed my headliner. i could not remove center dome light. screws were in way too tight. i had to carefully stuff the dynamat in between the few inches the headliner came down and the actual roof. i regret not putting in dynaliner or that cotton stuff, but there will be plenty of room. ill probably end up just putting more on the floor and in the doors. expensive and time consuming, but its nice that inside the car the sound hurts my ears, but outside with all the doors closed the stereo isn't too loud and all the crap isn't rattling like kids who have 15" subs in their rusted out shitbox cars. i also have to go 80mph to get as much wind noise as i used to get at 70mph.
