Headliner Removed

Does anyone have pics they can post of the roof of the OB with the headliner removed?

I am trying to determine which is the thickest sound deadening material that can fit. Thinking about installing a layer of dynamat and either 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 inch dynaliner. Thanks.

I can not get pictures but there should be room for 1/2 between the roof cross braces. Headliners are not fun to change and I have done a few. Be careful of the antenna wires that runs up the left A pillar and all the way to the back left corner. They are coax and can be ripped out if not careful. Do not bend the headliner or you will cause it to crease. Wish I could be more helpful.

It's not any heavier than an extra passenger...

I'm not going to do the headliner myself. I am just going to buy the materials and let the shop install it when they install the flip-down DVD player for my kids.

I will try to take some pics at the shop while in progress. Will be a few more weeks before I go in.

Long term plan is to have one of these installed in a custom fiberglass enclosure so I'll need all the sound deadening I can get.

I'd use undercoating and spray in urethane foam before I'd go with a bunch of expensive Dynamat stuff. Don't know if Dynamat is still asphalt based stuff, but I know that a lot of that dampening mat stuff turns brittle with age and starts to crumble.

Believe it or not, to get less vibration and more punch, I'd create some sort of ducting to give your passenger cabin a 'port' or two. Maybe something that goes from the kick panels into the fenders, or firewall out somewhere. If you've been in a car with a powerful system, you may notice the bass has a nicer, stronger 'hit' with the windows cracked. There's a reason for that - just like the reason an enclosure does better with the right volume and porting.

I thought about soundproofing the headliner too. Although I do remember pulling the headliner off some older cars I had...and yes it is a royal pain. The Dynapad or foam seems like it might be a better fit...because it is much less heavy and probably will last longer.

Read my post in the other thread about soundproofing. Dynamat or other deadeners will not do what you are asking. It's a waste of your money. It will make the sound of rain falling on your roof really cool, but that's about it.

You've got the right idea. You do want to remove the headliner, but not to install Dynamat. Look for a good acoustic material like Bonded Logic Ultratouch: Bonded Logic - Construction Products - UltraTouch Radiant Barrier This is the same stuff car makers put under your carpets. It's only 1/2" thick and very light. It should easily fit between the roof and headliner.
