had the same problem. my dealership had a tech rep from corporate come in and take a look. seems there is a brake line that runs behind the dash, and over the A pilar, that was not secured properly. I haven't heard the noise since. Call subaru of cherry hill nj and ask for Emery. They said that this problem was being documented and the solution would be shared in the next monthly report .
Hope that helps.

[QUOTE=JOEM][QUOTE=Grillbo-baggins]Joel,

they fixed it. turns out there was a loose brake line that was rattling against the frame. not sure how they fixed it. they took pictures and documented the incident, apparently this problem is fairly widespread. if you need more info, our want your dealer to fix the issue properly call cherry hill subaru in new
jersey and ask for Emery in the service department. I'm told this issue will be discussed in next months bulliten that is sent out to all the dealerships.

I was experiencing a rattle/buzz too, most prominently between 1800-2300 rpm or so in addition to during bumps and rough road vibration... it was driving me freaking nuts and I couldn't find the source of the noise.

So today, I did some more experimenting and discovered that the plastic dash trim below the steering column wasn't as tight as it could have been. I applied some pressure and managed to "snug it up" a bot; it killed the noise (for at least 30-40 miles). I'm just happy that I have a place to work from, and plan on either trying to find a way to tighten it up with the trim mounting points or by slipping a piece of foam into the dash trim gap.

So I looked at all the Subaru tech tips and their other publications but didn't see anything about your problem/solution. Also, I looked at my 2012 Outback and don't see any brake lines that run into the cabin. They do run along the firewall on the engine side so maybe one of them was rattling on the firewall itself.

Mine ended up being the windshield wipers. Yes, the windshield wipers!

They removed them and went for a ride and the noise was gone.

Traded for the 2013 anyway. It handles much better and no rattling wipers.

Looked at the car a little more last weekend. There are two lines, look to be for brakes, that run into the cabin on the passenger side but none on the driver side. Maybe they are talking about those.

I've got a rattle on the drivers side. I inserted rubber washers where the dash under panel is screwed to the metal brace behind the dash. Seemed to have eliminated most of the noise.

I'm gonna start doing this whenever I take something apart and put it back together.
