Default Prices wrong on Subaru website?

I notice the prices on the Subaru website's "Build Your Own" section are quite a bit different and lower than the prices on Carsdirect.com or the dealers.

For example:
Item / Carsdirect price/ Subaru price
rr bumper cover / $80 / $59.95
splash grd / $129 / $99.95
shock sensor / $140 / $109.95
110v outlet / $329 / $246
side molding / $249 / $219

Carsdirect.com's numbers match up perfectly with the dealers' numbers. For the most part they also match Edmunds' numbers as well. This leads me to think that the Subaru website has outdated prices.

I believe the Subaru price is MSRP. Dealers can choose to charge more or less than that.

Maybe this helps you.

I went on Trucar.com to find my Subaru. You enter the specs of a new car that you want. What it does is it gives you a graph of the actual purchase price of the last few cars near you, then allows you to print out a voucher for like $x over/below invoice. That's not usually the lowest price in the actual price graph -- but it's very close to the lowest. You take it to the dealership that it's printed for and they would honor the price (or offer you a comparable car with the same discount). It's buying a car with a coupon!

The dealership that I had my coupon was a bit rickety, so I ended up taking the coupon to a bigger dealership and they honored the pricing. It was so easy and you go into the dealership with less anxiety over having to negotiate.

I am comparing MSRP prices listed in each of these places. Carsdirect.com agrees with the dealers' listed MSRP. Subaru.com 's MSRP prices are way lower.

I went to Truecar.com, and their listed MSRP price also agrees with the Carsdirect MSRP price and the dealers' MSRP price. Subaru.com's MSRP price is different and lower for the exact same car with the exact same options.

BTW Truecar's target price is a good 'average' to shoot for. But by no means is it a good deal. For example, for a 2.5 Limited w/ moonroof and Nav, Truecar's target price is $1400 more than what I managed to get just by emailing a few local dealers myself.

Keep in mind that none of the options on Subaru's site include installation.

Examples:
Outlet: $83 - requires taking out the top half of the center console, drilling, reassembly.
Side molding: $30 - requires peeling off two-sided tape
