Default Blue Light at Night?

I recently picked up my 2012 Outback. I've done all the mods I've read about and wanted to do, but I am struggling with one thing. That is the blue illumination light that comes shines down onto the shifter from the dome light area.

Does anyone know how to remove or disable this?

Thanks!

A piece of black tape over the LED or light bulb will do it.

What is with the blue lights in car interiors? Red light is much easier on my eyes at night.

Is that its only purpose, to illuminate the shifter? I tried to find it in the manual but couldn't.

I agree with your comment, it is much easier to focus light in the red end of the spectrum and it preserves the night vision better.

IMHO, this blue light is an understated, but very nice touch.

I like it...nice blue ambient light. It does not affect night driving. It is a trend though...my 2010 Prius has it too.

In aviation, red is the preferred night vision color.
I consider the blue light a mood light.

That blue ambient light from the map light console is barely noticeable at night.

+1

at first i thought it was accidentally on and couldn't figure out how to turn it off because a friend of mine decided to touch every knob and button in the car when it was new to piss me off, and thought someone he turned on this blue light, then i realized it gets dimmer and brighter with the interior light switch.
