Default Are you willing to drive a few hours to save $1K?

Samy, You can do better... Look back on my and other posts in this thread back through Sept to see what the market was like in the fall. Subaru corporate is on a mission to increase market share and they are selectively, quietly discounting OB's. A "published invoice" deal is OK, but not great.

Also check on edmunds forum for the OB as it still shows deals $1K under invoice in late Nov (example below) but you will have to play hard to get with a local dealer or you may have to invest a day in driving if inventories are low in CT/MA area. I've had very good luck traveling to buy cars with one caveat though... you want to have more than 1 deal to look at in a market you travel to that is discounting cars so a dealer can't lever you into a higher price if they know you're from "out of town" and have to go home that day... Think about how much your time is worth and make the call. 8 hours of travel to save a thousand is still a pretty good return on your time (over $100/hour tax free). If you travel, try to make a fun weekend out of it and spend a night so you can sleep on an offer and make it less of a chore... And a dealer may drop price significantly to keep you from leaving their lot.

Also, do you have to buy now or is waiting until quarter-end next month work better? Didn't see mention of a trade in the deal, so hopefully you have some flexibility there (which increases your bargaining position a bit).

Good hunting.

I don't believe Subaru is selling THAT well. I live in the northeast and am in the market. As I was researching I emailed a few volume dealers down south in MD and VA, they quoted me around $800 and $900 under invoice without much effort on my part. All it took was a couple emails.. I'm thinking about driving down there this weekend.

Thanks very much for your response. I was shocked to learn that I could still potentially get up to another $1000 off. That seems very aggressive. Since I am not in a rush, do you think I should sit on my best offer(s) until mid-December and see what the dealers say then? My vehicle will most likely have to be factory ordered as most (if not all) dealers in NY, NJ, CT, MA don't have it.

I will checkout the Edmunds Forum.

I don't have a trade in.

Default Bought a new Outback.

I bought a twilight blue 2013 Outback 3.6 limited with the moon roof package from Capitol Subaru for $30,578+ tax, title, lic. The salesman I was working with said it was 1750 off invoice, which I find really hard to believe. It was a fair deal and much better than the $500 off invoice you can get from Costco.

Business is business. Yes, wait to talk to a dealer in Dec. Their fiscal year end may be 12/31, but keep in mind what matters is that Japanese companies typically have fiscal year end as of 3/31/2013. If you can find a dealer that's hungry to get a year end volume amount or otherwise is ready to deal, it will pay off well. Otherwise, what matters is what SOA is discounting the car to your chosen dealer.

If you "factory order" though, the best to expect is "published invoice" unless you find a really hungry dealer. I haven't heard of folks getting wonderful deals that way since the dealer thinks you are a "mark" and won't discount. I'd go in saying "I'm ready for a factory invoice less $1,500" deal. Then let them whine and hold firm and walk out to "think about it". You'll get it.

Be thirsty my friends.

Thanks for all the help I received from this site in figuring a deal for my car purchase. I drove home my first Subaru this weekend. An Outback Limited 2.5 with the Special Appearance Package

Splash guards
All weather floor mats
Rear bumper cover
Rear seat back protector
Rear cargo net
Real side cargo net

MSRP= $33,981; Invoice figured at $31,392; paid $30,419 before tax, title and license, plus dealer costs of $272
Works out to about 10.5% below MSRP and 3.1% below invoice.

Still shopping.

Looking at the Premium CVT 2.5.

Things I am running into.

I think Edmunds is off on the Invoice price and TMV.

When I use the build it tool on the Subaru against the OB listed in inventory on the dealer sites (several in FL one in Boston and one in NH). I consistently get MSRP around $200 higher than at the SoA site.

Would there be a mid year price change that the SoA web site doesn't know about?

One dealer was $500 higher but they offer a Life Time Warranty with every car.
I don't know if that is built into the price.

The dealer sites that list Invoice price are consistently lower than edmunds Invoice price.

I did get a low ball (3% under invoice) from one dealer that was revealing.
I am not sure if that will be his final price.

I also found one site where they had a popular Pkg price and then also added in each item in the pkg, so basically charging twice for each option, watch out!

Hopefully before Christmas.

It is probably advertising fee. This fee is regional. So SOA website doesn't include it.

Default Advice here has paid off; next steps?

edawg and friends

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the edmunds forums.

As a reference I am looking for an Outback 2.5i Limited (PZEV) with:
1) options: Moonroof/NAV/EyeSight
2) accessories: Rear setback protectors, body side moldings, splash guards, wheel arch moldings, moonroof air deflector

Without DMV, Tax, Fees:

The lowest vehicle quote I had in CT/MA: 31200-31400

I checked down in VA (6 hr train ride away): 30600.

So about 700 less already. I guess I could: 1) ask my local dealer to match or 2) just sit on all of these offers for about 1 week and see if the dealers can decrease their price? Thoughts?
