If he's in Hawaii Bro - then just some aluminum L brackets cut from L stock sold at Home Depot - some stainless Home store screws through the plastic rails - then a "U" Bolt to hold a cross bar will do for a surf board. Their top speeds there are 45mph and its not like they are going far. ;-)

One of my close cousins lives on Oahu and we head out there a few times a year. I even raced a sailboat from SF to Oahu. Any sort of Business on the islands is a goofy one facing lots of issues from stupid GOV decisions and taxes to the whole issue of getting your product out there.

I think he was suggesting that the Hawaii friend would be looking to design + manufacture something for the niche market of other Subaru owners everywhere - not just in HI. But the problem is that if he does the actual manufacturing on the island, the cost of shipping back to the mainland pretty much makes it too expensive for anyone to be interested in.

Maybe if he feels like designing and prototyping and then having somebody in the US do the actual manufacturing, that might make sense.

Have there been any updates on this yet? The big advantage of using the Yakima system is you can actually increase the width of your mounting solution by running a wider bar. This really helps when your trying to carry multiple items on the top such as a kayak rack on one side and a snow ski rack on the other. You can keep both systems installed without having to swap them out as the seasons change.

Any updates on this issue of Yakima bars/towers/landing pads on 2013 Outback?
I bought an Outback a couple of months ago, and will definitely need
the Yakima long-bars (54" I think) for canoe and pod, etc.

Ditto. Also waiting on a solution to carry multiple kayaks, a bike, and the multimount. They didn't have an answer when I called 2-3 weeks ago.

I just got a 2013 Outback Limited and am now finding out about the rack issues. I've always used Yakima racks on my previous car (2004 Accord). I bought the Subaru rack adapters - both the horizontal and the vertical. I found the verticals will work with my ski rack but can't quite figure out how - or if - the oblong horizontal clips will work with my Yakima Copperhead bike rack. Any ideas??

I have called Yakima several times (received also email from them); they are in process of manufacturing landing pads that will fit 2013 OB. The design is completed and since most of their stuff is manufactured in Mexico, it's going to take a couple of weeks (or months) before you can see them here in the U.S. The manufacturer in Mexico is closed for holidays... HOLA! RELAJARSE Amigos!
So - everybody "chill" and wait.... LOL
Happy New Year!

Until Yakima comes through, I decided to move the rear crossbar to the back position. Unfortunately that makes it so that *neither* bar can stow away when you're done with it! Grrrrrr.....
