As already posted in some similar threads, I've got just less that 1000 Miles on my 2013, and am getting almost 25 on the dot average 50/50 highway and city with some hills here and there. when I first got the car at 10mi I struggled to get 24. All regular gas. I'm not too impressed, but my MPG IS improving after each fill-up. This includes driving in all of this wet nor-cal weather.
Give it a little more time, wait for winter blends and all that junk to pass over, and then re-evaluate. Until then, try new driving techniques. Nothing much else you can do....

The EPA estimates 24 city / 30 highway, but 26 combined.
If you are getting 25 mpg with 50/50 cty/hwy driving I'd say your pretty much on the mark. Remember, it's an ESTIMATE not an exact science. I wouldn't loose sleep over 1 mpg. I may be a little biased because I'm used to my old High Output V8 Jeep which averaged 13 combined mpg (and it required premium fuel).

My 2013 2.5 Ltd w/2300 miles suffers with very short trips in cooler weather relative to the Toyota V6 it replaced. The car is as advertised or better with other driving.

Sounds about right. I get 25-26 with a mix of highway and city driving. Recently though, hit 40.8 averaged over 76 miles - although that was mountain driving.

I'm up to about 22,000 miles in my 2011 2.5 / CVT. My observations, based on a long road trip over thanksgiving, Montana to Seattle to Salem, Oregon and back, are about 28-29 mpg overall but pretty big differences with different speeds. I usually drive about five mph over the limit and leave the cruise control on. In Oregon (speed limit 65 / real world 70) I was getting 32 or so. In Montana (speed limit 75 /real world 82 or so) 27 or 28. If I was willing to drive 70 everywhere I went, I could beat 30 all the time. All in all I'm pleased, though, given the fact that I hauled a ton of crap with me, and had to drive over several mountain passes in crap conditions.

I did a 350 mile trip yesterday, a repeat of a trip I made about two months ago when the car only had about 1000 miles on the ODO. I'm up to about 4500 now. Two months ago I saw 28.5 indicated for the drive from Atlanta to Birmingham. Yesterday I saw 31.5 for the same trip. One thing I figured out by watching the instantaneous MPG gauge was that there was a big difference between 70 mph and 75 mph fuel economy. And if I ran 65 or below, I got even better mileage as proved during some long 55 mph construction zones.
The key to getting good mileage is simply to keep speed down. If you want to run 75+ mph with cruise control in hilly country, you will pay for the extra speed with worse fuel economy. I'm pretty sure now if I were to run long stretches on the interstate at 60 mph without cruise, I could get 33+ mpg all the time. However, creeping down the highway isn't worth the trade off in travel time to me. And I really like cruise control, too. |

My wife and I went to CT last weekend in her Passat. I set the cruise to ~60 to get better fuel economy (plus traffic wasn't too bad and we were early for where we had to be). My wife kept commenting on how slow I was driving. I used to drive 70+, but with the cost of gas and the expense of having a baby, I've managed to slow things down (most of the time). I averaged 35mpg for the trip.

There are many factors that affect mileage; I wouldn't worry about it. When you hit 10 K miles, your mileage will stabilize.
And, the hand book does address the first 1000 miles driving (break-in period). Re-visit your handbook that most people don't even read! One of the items is to avoid using cruise control... |
