Good question - but it seems that the "public" does not want to store more junk in those nets as it might compromise safety, in case of a crash. Junk in those nets may puncture the seats side air bags or curtain air bas (in some vehicles). Product safety and liablity issues might be the reason!

You might be right, but I think it is purely a cost issue.
If it were a safety issue, a net would not be put there, period. On either side.

2010 Forester had a simple cut in the back of the passenger's seat that created a pocket (no net) so there was actually a cost saving doing it that way. Does not seem to me as a "cost" issue.

Whatever the reason, I don't care. Just wish it were there.
Also, wish Subaru, in thier finite wisdom, would not have deleted the compass when you buy one with a sunroof. Somewhere in the $1750 they charge for the sunroof, there should have been enough money to leave in the compass.

I agree with that one ... I miss my compass in the rear view mirror. But like someone else said, people would have 2 compasses to look at and would tend to compare the headings with NAV unit... not sure, what was behind this odd issue/design...

I like the plastic for all the mentioned reasons, especially us cloth folks I sincerely doubt they use real leather on the backs of the seats anyway.

I doubt the focus groups ask what DON'T you want in a car.

More than likely options were given and most people chose passenger side for convinience reasons and didn't think much about the drivers side. Then Subaru took it from there and saved a few $.

agree completely.
My Ford Flex has map pockets on both front seat backs, and they work well, and are used often.
My OB has no Nav, so I have no compass.
Dumb. Dealer says he has had many complaints on that, and passed them on to SoA.

Focus groups (at least the ones, that I have participated in) had 3 options to answer: yes, no and don't care. Have you been on one? On top of it, you never know, what car are you evaluating; those are prototypes and all factory markings are removed or masked out. Nice thing is that they pay you for doing it - at that time, it was $ 50 per clinic.

Exactly my point. They find out enough people "don't care" about a net on the back of the drivers seat and they do away with it.

It appears the two seat backs are the same shape. I wonder if they are interchangable? Anyone have the back off fixing the lumbar cable clip? How do they mount? Clips??
