I was looking at some Audis before I bought 2013 OB but the prices are out of control here...there and everywhere!
I like the Outback for what I want it.

Beside the Outback, I have a Passat R36 (replaced my V8 Touareg) and an Audit TT Roadster, and an older Jepp Grand Cherokee modified for offroad use. Each vehicle has their own highs and lows.

It was important for me that the Outback has a manual transmission (I tow it behind my motorhome) an AWD.

The 2013 replaced my 2003 Outback and is a mile better than this one was. The stiffer suspension of the 2013 provides an almost Fahrvergnuegen type driving experience.

I think that I can easily live with this vehicle.

It has nothing to do with air or the high speed on german Autobahn, as it is the same for the most countries and there are even countries you only can drive 80 km/h on highway.

It has to do with the cost of oil chance, cost of oil, common sense and education of the people.

You initial question has already been aswered, so another point of view:

Those "rounding errors" show, that the whole thing is way overrated. In Europe they speak about 15000 km, in US about 7500 miles and for Canada they speak about 12000 km, because this correspondens best with 7500 miles. A difference of 3000 km...

Yep - oil changes every 15,000 km or once a year in Germany. Do those "pesky" Germans produce a better quality of oil? LOL
Actually, when I had my VW Tdi I bought some special Mobil oil for VW diesel engine at PepBoys and the Mobil 1 liter plastic can was re-labelled with US label. When I peeled the US label off, it had German original label underneath...figure that one out.

Speaking of diesels, few yers back, when I parted with my 2010 VW Tdi Sport Wagon I wanted Forester diesel (that is sold in EU with MT only). I did some research how to import it into the U.S. and the red tape around importing it was just too much. The cheapest would be to bring it into Canada, register it there and eventualy bring it down to the U.S. Another was to bring it to these shores as a "tourist" (US Customs calls it a temporary T.I.) drive it around here for a year and then try to register it. Eventually I gave up and bought gasoline Forester XT. I've worked for SAAB many years importing and exporting test/prototypes vehicles that were being tested in Calif/Ariz/Nevada deserts and high altitude tests on Pike's Peak in Colorado - so I know, how it works!

No, it has nothing to do with german oil, as in every county - except the US - this is more or less so. Fact is, modern oil does not need to be changed every 3000 or 4000 miles, but in the US customers are still conditioned to do such and the dealers are not unhappy about it and put those stickers on the cars. As long as the customers are not beginning to reflect themselves and reading the owners manual, nothing is going to change.

There has been another discussion to that topic a few weeks ago: Stop changing your oil - Edmunds
