Not sure if OP driving lot of city/residential, ie... going thru' 20+ traffic lights in his daily commute.... if this is the case, Only Hybrid car (with Hyper-miling) driving style with help MPG.... My daily commute goes thru' abt 1 miles of residential with lots of stop signs, my OB average mpg in that area is under 10 mpg but I can get 50+mpg with my old Civic Hybrid.... |

I have a 2013 with about 2500 miles on it and I'm getting about 25 mpg with mostly city driving, and about 28 with more hwy miles. This is in northern Indiana, about 15 minutes south of Michigan. I'm expecting mileage to improve with summer gas and after the first oil change. The real time mpg display is helpful in learning how to drive efficiently. I also have a 6spd, which may be less affected by cold weather. And it shifts when I tell it to.
I found that I can drive the same speed and get poor or good gas mileage. You can apply a little more or less pressure on the accelerator and the speed doesn't change, but mileage changes a lot.

Well now I'm at 3300 miles and my last tank was my best yet at 21.9 mpg and I drove a lot of 55 mph and not many lights, and very light throttle. While it is an improvement the point is I should not have to drive a car with the softest foot and never exceed 65 mph all of the time to achieve 22 mpg on a car that is advertised at 24 mpg city !!! If I really drove the city, I'd probably get 11mpg.
I know if I take it to the dealer I will get the run around, so it's live with it or sell my brand new car. Truth is I'm going to keep it, but am not happy about being mislead on actual mileage. I bought this car expecting 26 average not 20-21 !! |

I've not observed less than 23, with my worst driving. I typically average 26. I think either your driving is demanding or something is wrong with your car.

A lot of "no information" here. Where do you live, what type of gas do you use, what is the normal "trip" that you make, what is the temperature, and finally what is carried (people and other things) in the car for each of these trips?

You have to consider also, what they use as "city" conditions...
Here is a link to the newer EPA test guidelines... Detailed Test Information I have seen 30 mpg highway on my 2.5 CVT the first day I drove it home...but it was all highway. In my normal everyday driving, I am getting around 19...but I feel that is ok and nothing is wrong with the car, because it is barely city driving, more residential. First, its been below 10 degrees most mornings for the last month. So even though I don't let it idle alot, even a few minutes will drop your mileage considerably. Next, I back out of the driveway, go down the alley, stop, turn left or right, stop at end of block. Go another block, stop...goe three blocks, stop, then another three blocks, stopping at each one, where I drop my daughter at school. Then the same back home. If it is a work day, it is the same, with a mile drive tacked on and three more stops...so I never break 30 mph and I have alot of stops. All this pushing snow, cold tires and engine components, and winter gas. My previous vehicle, a V8 powered VW Touareg, was rated 14 city, but in 10,000 miles over a years worth of tracking it via fuelly, my avg mpg was 13.8, and my winter mpg was sitting around 10-11 depending on how much highway driving I did. As someone else posted, there are alot of variables with city driving, and over the years, I have found that for me, most vehicles don't get what they are rated for city driving, but I can usually eke out higher than they are rated for highway. Just my input. |
