So our cars arent on the recall list but still that doesnt mean that they arent equipped with un-safe airbags. Anyone know for sure who makes airbags for this gen?
Mine IS on a recall... (05 H6 LLBeamer) but my better half's 2009 Honda Civic isn't....
I am having that fixed tomorrow... go to MySubaru.com, set up an account and input your VIN - and you will see, if it is or not...although there are other ways, how to find out, if a Subbie is on recall or not....
After being badly burned by the the GM switch recall, the Feds are being very cautious. If there is any chance an air bag is defective I think they will apply pressure to recall. Your insurance wallet card has your VIN number. Check it on Subaru's website once a week until they finish determining the scope of the problem.
well the fact that they are currently limiting it to "hot and humid" areas is the fact that is freaking me out. I dont live in a hot and humid area but regardless of where I live, it is a faulty product if we indeed have that airbag.
Takata, Honda and Chrysler's executives were grilled on Govt channel last night; a very interesting heated debate with our lawmakers indeed... and, Subaru name was mentioned there as well...
That is why it is imperative to register your Subaru VIN with Mother Subaru (no matter how old your Subaru may be) so that you will get a notice in the mail from them, when something is being recalled...
I emailed Subaru customer support yesterday demanding to know who made the airbags in my 2009 Subaru Outback -- a year and model *not* currently affected by the Subaru/Takata recall.
The impetus for my email was the news in yesterday's New York Times that Takata has been using the volatile (but extremely cheap) compound ammonium nitrate as the propellant in its airbags since 2000 -- and *still* uses it.
Subaru at first kind of blew me off, telling me that my Subaru (whose VIN number I'd supplied as part of the customer service inquiry) wasn't affected by the current recalls. When I replied that this news wasn't good enough, and that I wanted to know because of my newfound awareness that Takata continues to use the same unstable compound in its airbags that has caused so many deaths and injuries to Honda owners, the rep relented and informed me that the driver side airbag is made by Toyoda Gosei and the passenger side airbag is indeed made by Takata.
So now it's up to my wife and me to decide whether the Takata airbag should be replaced.
Even non-shrapnel-propelling airbags injure people, breaking thumbs, wrists, cutting folks who wear eyeglasses, etc. - and they only marginally increased safety when introduced, unlike the 3 point seatbelt that was a huge leap forward in safety.
disabling the airbag until this shakes out might be a good approach for some people who have concerns. No, I don't know the best way to do that for your car.
If you elect to replace it, keep all original receipts as there could be reimbursement later as the issue unfolds.
^^^ I don't want to drive another 500 miles and start geting stuff from my old car. I was already suspicious there, when I started to transfer stuff from my Baja to the ****** - like wiper blades, floor mats - I didn't have the chance to snatch/switch my Optima Yellow Top battery (I didn't have the 10mm wrench with me) for the Walmart's battery that is in my car now...LOL
Next time, I will make 10 mm wrench a standard issue in my wallet.
We just got a letter for our 2006 LL Bean for a recall on the passenger side airbag. Metal fragments may fly through the passenger upon airbag deployment in an accident. Don't sit in the passenger seat till fixed... Something like that, not really but sort of... don't have it in front of me.
Easy fix, just don't run into anything or anybody.
Non-sarcasm - I am now in search of a dealership. We don't use dealerships for work or anything so I have no idea which one to take this to to get it taken care of.
Any dealer can process the recall, free to you, pick one you find convenient. Also, they can lend you a car, free to you, until yours is fixed IF you tell them you need to be able to carry a passenger safely in the front seat.
I suspect, but dont know for sure, that if you drop off your car and accept a loaner, Subaru will "find" the parts needed more quickly.
Here is a possible script. You call the dealer on the phone and say
"I would like an appointment ASAP to drop off my car for the Airbag recall. My Vin is XXXX.
I am not OK with not being able to use the front passenger seat of my car until the parts come in. I will need a loaner car ASAP."
note, accepting a Loaner car HELPS your dealer make more money from Subaru. It also helps them make you want a new car, which makes your dealer more money from You
I got this notice for my '06 Outback XT Limited. In the letter they said they have a shortage of parts, and will let me know when I can get it fixed. Until then, I'm not to let anyone ride in my passenger seat.
Props to the single life!
