Videos to come but I just wanted to throw the information out there. I swapped out my mufflers for some Thrush Stainless Steel Glasspacks 2.25" inlet and outlet. Sounds pretty decent! Waiting on RalliSport Racing for some UELs.
Happy to see people modifying NA Subies. A large amount of people will say that modifying anything with an EJ253 is a waste of time and money, but I think it's a good thing to give personality to a people carrier.
Thanks I guys! I totally agree and at only 4hp gain, it definitely means we NA Subie guys do it for the sound, haha. I don't want a "look at me" exhaust, just something with a little volume and sounds good. The glasspacks and Rallisport Racing UEL Header (with High Flow Cat) will be the only changes to my exhaust system. I promise, videos to be posted soon!
It was a big help! I didn't remove the black plastic under trays on the OB but the process was exactly the same. I did use a 7/8 line wrench that I borrowed from work to remove the O2 sensors. It went way easier than I thought it would. The whole install was easier than I thought it might be, about like when I did UELs on my '99.
I was however disheartened to find an oil leak. Next on my fix list. Realized I don't have a an oil cooler for the oil cooler gasket to leak from because I don't have a turbo car haha!
As for the sound, it's awesome! I don't know yet how I feel about the dual glasspacks but time will tell. I am tempted to unbolt them at the flanges and see what that sounds like. Videos to come.
And I took the stock manifold all apart, just out of curiosity. I saved everything, even though it will never go back on the car. It made up of like 30 pcs bolted together.
Next question are you going to wrap them with thermolic wrap?
It sounds great, got the Subie sound, a little quiet but beefy!
Haha yes there are a lot of parts and bolts on that junk.
As for the wrap, I don't think I am going to. They are coated with Cerma Krome, I think that's how you spell it, supposedly it retains heat up "over 1300F base metal temp / 1600F exhaust gas temp." - RalliSport Racing http://rallisportracing.com/Ceramic_Coating_Options.php
Love these videos. I got to ride in a 2.5i Impreza with a similar setup today. It was very fun experience. Can't wait to get the money to buy some UELs.
Why didn't you guys tell me it sounded like crap!? Haha just kidding, last night, just to see, I unbolted the axle back flanges and liked the sound, so Glasspacks went bye-bye. Cut them off and bolted the flanges back on so I have just 90* bends after the flanges so the exhaust shoots out the back instead of the side or up at the bottom of the car. Thinking single pipe is the way to go. Tossing around ideas for a muffler.
Wow that sounds great, I've been wanting to do something similar to my 05, finally stumbled across this thread and I'm starting to get excited. Was there any issues installing the header on the outback like any modifications or did it just bolt right up?
Ooh I gotta do head gaskets too, mind if I ask how much it's costing ya?
I have multiple exhaust leaks from a few rust spots and im planning on redoing the entire
exhaust system. Really wanted the SUBARU BURBLE when I bought mine, however I was unaware how much aftermarket stuff isn't out there for these n/a outback models.
Well, my head gaskets I bartered some labor and cost of my old '99 that my mechanic bought from me.
But the headers were just over $1,000.
You can get the headers from rallisportracing.com and you can get an axleback kit from namelessperformace. The same exhaust parts toward the rear of the car fit the same from 2.5 N/A to 2.5 Turbo and 3.0 N/A
My wife is requesting i take the Nameless axleback off. A little loud for her (she got pulled over the other day... of course, that only happens to her!) When she told the cop to look under, I guess he saw that it is indeed a fully in tact exhaust system and so she got no ticket, but she doesn't seem to enjoy getting pulled over. I did the 4" rather than 5" though.
Alright my friends I am back! Sorry for the hiatus, the car was waiting for head gaskets and a boat load of other work. I supplied the parts and my Subaru mechanic friend that took my old '99 off my hands did the work to pay off the '99.
So... UPDATE!
Replaced the resonator with one of the Glasspacks, sounds alright, still testing it out. Got some videos.
Enjoy! Tell me how it sounds. More to come. I'm thinking about a really good brand of axle back exhaust or even a cat back. I would like to go duals, so I'm trying to find something to bolt in. If need be I could modify. See my handiwork.
Thanks! I'll have to let you know. I have only drove short trips since getting it done. It's not bad so far. A little loud, really great sound at high rpm.
I need to get gopro footage here soon. The revs video was with my phone, LG G3. And the driving one was a text message video I recorded for a friend so the quality is lowered.
Maybe a muffler or some more piping would help the sound. I hate the looks of fart cans/cannons.
I'm open to ideas.
