If you want a clicker on your keychain that unlocks the doors, that's easy. You can buy cheap replacements for the originals and program the car to respond to them. You don't need the actual Subaru ones, there are generic ones on eBay that work.
If you want a keypad on the exterior of the car so you don't need to carry anything at all, that's different- but alarm & stereo specialists do sell that.
Your first description is what I want: a clicker on the keychain that unlocks the doors.
You suggested "cheap replacements for the originals," but the car did not come with any keyfobs when I got it 1.5 years ago. Are you saying it originally came with keyfobs and somewhere in the car the keyless control unit is already installed?
Wow. I thought I was in for a mini project and would be out a decent amount of $$ (like my upgrade to an 07 head unit and a GROM). This is a much easier thing.
Thanks very much. It's sort of amazing that I can sit on my couch watching SNL and surfing parts sites and get expert advice nearly instantly. You guys are gems.
I'll just add that I picked up a couple of used ones on eBay for about 8 bucks each. They worked fine once the car was programmed, but I understand that sometimes solder breaks down on the wee board, so YMMV.
