Default What are these for?

Spotted a Gen-2 OB wearing some socks yesterday.
I can't figure out what purpose they serve, unless the car is wearing some BBS splits or Rotiforms or something...

Genuinely mystified - anybody know?

I've seen something similar on RV's around here, especially if they are parked for long periods of time. I have no idea, though, what the real reason is that they do it.. My speculation would be that they are trying to protect the tires and/or wheels from "the elements."

I've seen wheel covers for painting but I don't know if those are it. Can't even remember if they were disposable or not.

Cuts sunlight, UV & heat will accelerate dry rot in a tire. Not usually an issue unless it's something like an RV where age & exposure damages stuff faster than mileage. Once you drive more than say... 8-10k miles a year you'll be wearing the tread faster than the sun is drying the sidewalls.

Although dry rot is real... and the sun can accelerate it....

The real reason is that RV owners, as a market segment, have money to burn and there's no law against taking it from them.

Definitely for sun protection. Look at the roof rack. Certainly not the nice gloss black of something kept out of the sun or cared for. Same thing with the trim - looks like its even started to come apart above the doors. Take a look at the tread area on the rear bumper, which also looks about oxidized enough to almost match the 'titanium' trim color. Oh, and that paint? Look at how flat the paint is, considering the direct sunlight reflecting off the windows - even though those are fairly dirty. Also notice the seat cover on the driver's seat. Bet ya the seat beneath is pretty weathered.

Maybe they're just tired of dog-pee staining their rims.

Or, maybe the rain (and/or dog whizz) gets on the rotors and rusts them when it's parked for a long time.

Kinda like the real reason you posted a reply to me is because you didn't read my other post..?
