At 200k the timing chain is supposed to be inspected. That's a $1500 job around here. Might as well replace everything while you're in there, water pump, chains, tensioners, reseal the oil pump and button it all back up with a new goop-gasket. That cost me just under $3k last year.
My brother (A Subaru Mechanic) says some years can be read with the dealership select monitor. CarDoc might be able to confirm this with his VDC and scan tool. -Tim |

Aftermarket Scanners won't access the PCM in that regard. You can look at all the data from the engine and transmission depending on what type scanner is used. This gets back to getting the dealer to let you take it to shop that does pre-purchase diagnostics or checks. Its your best bet to knowing what you are getting into.
I give a lot of my customers a list. The list is used to haggle down the prices and works every time. Its also a "gotcha". Can't hide information from the PCM, but you need to be able to access the PCM. |

Considering the lack of the 'Trip A/B' and peculiar ghosted digit, and the conflict of records vs advertised mileage, I'm surprised nobody has flagged that off of CL yet, or reported it for fraud. The preponderance of the evidence here screams that. I'd say the seller most certainly knows the truth, and is a likely suspect as the cause of the display's failure. I sure know I wouldn't touch a car with that kind of questionable disparity of information - and I wouldn't trust the person selling it to try to 'explain'.

You really don't need to trust the person, just disregard everything they say and give the car a good going over, if a salesman drove this car on the interstate other than a few engine parts that mite be getting to the end of there life span, i would rather have it than one with 50k thats been in the mountains and creeks of the rockies it's entire life.
although thats where there the funnest. if the car looks right, i mean under in, in it, on it, see if the owner will let you take it out for a drive, if you know what your looking at you should be able to check out the car without the owner even speeking a word. JMO Dar |
