I'm standing on the sidelines watching and waiting before I buy a 2015 Outback with the 2.5 engine. Any of you 2015 owners having any issues with excessive oil consumption in your 2.5 engine?
I vote for this new thread. Too much talk about prior years models in the other thread. As long as folks stay specific to 2015 Outback & Legacy 2.5's this will be an informative thread, as we'll see if the 2.5 engine 'improvements' for 2015 have made a difference. I'll be looking here.
I have had my 2015 2.5 limited for one month and now have 1100 miles. I checked
the oil last night. At top level, NO apparent oil loss. I was careful to follow the
break in directions for the first 1000 miles, if that makes any difference. I will
keep a check, but honestly don't expect any problem given my experience with
three other subarus in the past.
Got ours 6/30, 2350 miles, I can't see any difference from when I took delivery. I checked it when new and about four times since, as I was sensitized by all the traffic on the board about oil consumption. So far no problem.
What are you waiting to see? You want to know if every 2015 engine is flawless? I can tell you now that they won't be. I'm not sure what the rate of oil burners are in previous models... 1 in 1,000? Mine doesn't burn any in 7,500 miles OCIs. I've got almost 60,000 on it, and I do a lot of towing. I only hear about oil burners on the internet... where people go to complain. You just aren't hearing from the vast majority who have non-oil-burning engines.
Forester, Impreza and Crosstrek forums ran polls to find out what percentage of FB20 and FB25 engines were burning oil. About 10 to 15% of people reported problems, based on about 100 responses in each poll. Even adjusting for the size of the polls, it's clear that it is not a "1 in a 1000" problem, but rather a fairly common issue that is affecting a significant percentage of owners.
The fact that Subaru:
- has issued two TSBs to address the issue, expanding the scope of repairs from ring replacement to full short block replacement
- reduced the oil change interval from 7500 to 6000 miles
- has plastered their web site and dealerships with "advice" to check oil between changes
is a clear indication that it is a common and serious issue.
I am posting because I have a new 2.5FB equipped Legacy Limited - true, it's not an Outback, but the engine would be the same as an Outback of same year.
The good news is that there is no perceivable drop in oil level in 3200 mile.
I did check the oil when the cars was new, so I know that it was filled to exactly the full mark on the dipstick. After hearing about some 2014 models, I am a bit concerned, and therefore monitoring it closely. I have been driving Hondas for the past 20 years, but so far, I love this car!
ditto, I read about they past models and check mine a lot to keep its pulse...
It's been perfect as it is a 2000 miles right now. I'll be super p"o'd" if it is an oil burner becasue I have a lot of vehicles and NONE of them lose oil between oil changes.
"The 2.5L is mechanically similar to the four-cylinder used in last year's model, but about 80 percent of the engine's parts - including pistons and cylinder head - have been updated for the 2015 model year."

Actually, nobody with a 2015 reported oil burning issues. The respondent, Bob259, details show he owns a 2014 OB. So either he didn't read the question or he bailed on his '14, bought a '15, and is twice-unlucky.
The oil burners tend to be only manual transmissions, according to my Subaru dealer. They replaced my motor at 18,000 miles. New motor burns as much or more than the old one, but only on long/high speed highway trips ( 1 qt every 1500 miles or so). Mine is a manual.
Me too. Just changed my oil (6060 miles) and checked the level before hand (for the first time). Still near the top of the dipstick marks. And just to be clear, I am assuming that is the oil level from day 1, but I never checked before.
I have a 2014 and at about 3,000 my low oil light went on- put oil in (got yelled at for doing so after being told to do so by subaru)
we've done one oil consumption test so far with no problem and it goes back for its second check next week.
New 2015 Premium. Only 80 miles now so cannot say anything about oil usage.
However, the new engine was slightly overfilled from the factory (as many also reported). About 1/4" above the full dot when checked with cold engine. So if it falls to the full dot, then some oil is already used even if it is still full.
Just changed the oil after a 2,500 miles road trip from Chicago to Denver and back, car is at 7,500 miles and no oil burn. My 3.6R Legacy before the Outback would burn a quart ever 3,000 miles.
