I searched, but only found oil consumption threads on 2.5 engines, and for 3.6, I found the Gen 4 thread ( maybe it is same engine, I don't know ) and 2013 models, so I'll ask here: I checked the oil today on my brand new 2015 3.6 ( 2200 miles ) , and it was next to the min ( almost one quart needed ).Manual says that in break in period, I'll get more oil consumption, but honestly never had same situation before on brand new car, with 2000 miles, lost a quart ?
I've got just under 6000 miles and the oil level has held. I have not heard of any problems with the 3.6 regarding oil consumption. If I were you, I'd check the oil often and document the oil level and how much your a having to add.
4k on mine and very little oil loss. The break in period on any engine can be different from one to the other. What was the oil level when you first got the car? It could be that it didn't get topped off at the factory. Check carefully for any leaks on your driveway first. Top it off and watch it carefully till your first oil change.
Was it full when you got the car, or is that the first time checking the oil? Was the car cold and on level ground when checked?
It's not uncommon for a new car to burn a bit of oil, but if nobody else is seeing it, then you may be an outlier. I'd keep an eye on it, for sure, but don't panic yet.
I never checked the oil when I got it, just today, so can't tell if it was not filled properly from factory ( is it possible ? )I followed break in by the book, and no leaks in driveway. I was on a little trip, and then waited 10 minutes before checking the oil.
I always park in the same spot and check when the car has sat overnight.....others will say to check it warm. The key is to be consistent how and when you check your oil. After reading that you don't know where you started on oil level, my bet is that you're not burning any oil and that it was just a little low to begin with.
As someone else mentioned - consistency in checking it... I have seen it vary on the dipstick at various gas stations... some are level, some aren't (where you park). I typically check mine when filling up.
I was surprised how much it could vary based on slope of the parking lot!
I checked it again this morning, parked on very level spot at work, and like "ammcinnis" &" walker" said, it turned out to be the parking position variation. It was at max, so no need to add anything at all. But I'm surprised, as where I checked it on the street where I park at home, there is a very very minimal incline, not enough to have the car roll in neutral, and on the right side of the road where there is the small curvature of the road for rain to dissipate . I always checked my cars same street, and never had any issue. That thing is so sensitive to parking position. Thanks anyway, I'm reassured now.
Ya the boxer 6 dipstick will read low/high when parked on a crowned street. You'll notice the dipstick is on the "high" side of the car when your LHD car is parked this way, making the oil level appear low. Try parking it backward on the same street and see if it reads high.
I've had three 3.6 cars and none ever used any oil. Like zero, none. As with any engine, excessive oil consumption is always possible due to engine-to-engine variances, but I've never heard a peep about oil consumption with the 3.6. Glad this wasn't anything.

There are plenty of posts about outbacks burning oil. I eat a quart every thousand miles. I am livid about it but Subaru swears it is within their tolerances (also probdbly why they make us get new plugs at 60k mikes). I took it in when it was new and had this issue and Cochran Subaru said they checked it and nothing is leaking and my consumption wasn't enough to qualify for any kind of overhaul.
