Default Let's talk politics...

I know this is a fine line to walk and a touchy subject, especially on the internet

But with the 2012 primaries at breast, I thought I'd start a calm, civil roundtable discussion about whom to vote for in 2012.

I find myself a liberal conservative. I agree alot with conservative fiscal policy, but cannot agree with many religious / religious based views on the conservative side.

I have been trying to follow the GOP campaign, but was curious who everyone was choosing and why. I hope we can keep this positive and with conversation FOR a candidate, not political bashing why not to vote for someone. I would love to see links to information or points that are brought up.

Basically if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all

(I have a feeling this thread will get really bad really fast... please prove me wrong)

This (probably) won't end well.

That being said, I'm not really impressed with any of my options for 2012...pondering writing in Optimus Prime. At least that would be a leader I could totally support.

That's kind of where I am. Last election I voted for the candidate I disliked the least, but I wasn't too confident in my choice. I'm afraid I'll do the same this year. I'm hoping to hear some good reasons to choose someone in the primary, hopefully picking a strong contender. It's hard to find any non biased info.

I'm half tempted to vote "None of the above" and make Brewster proud lol

And thanks for the obligatory warning...

I voted for Ron Paul in '88

But I don't think I can vote for him, if he gets the nomination, as a Republican. I might change my mind on that.

I'm used to people telling me I'm throwing my vote away (though I disagree) but I will probably vote straight Libertarian again.

(as a note, at libertarian precinct conventions and caucuses, None of the Above is always on every ballot. If folks feel none of the candidates for an office are appropriate and NOTA gets the most votes - then that ballot position gets no candidate.)

The Rethugs are an odd mix of 'keep gov't out of my life', 'gov't is there to serve the corporations' and 'force religious values into everyone's lives', ain't they?

There is some role for gov't, there is some degree of regulation and enforcement required, and rational solutions to real-world problems will never be found, NEVER, through the application of ideology.

Some real solutions will look grossly right-winged to the left, and some will look grossly left-wing to the right... sometimes for the same solution to a problem.

Sadly, that seems to be the case more and more. I don't see any candidate of either party that that gives me any great confidence.

As a nation and a society, we have let polarization, self-interest and extreme views dominate the discourse.

Disagreements are met with yelling and our "great news media" has as much depth in reporting as sheet of tissue paper and issues take second fiddle to poll numbers and candidate gaffes.

Depending on the issue, I can be a "conservative" or "liberal" or "moderate" and try to come down on the side that makes most sense to me. It's always important to see the issue from the other point of view because maybe there is some common ground.

I don't see much of that at all.

.
Hmm.... think I'll go with a family-values serial adulterer who wants
to protect the sanctity of marriage and shrink government by putting
all interpersonal relationships and feminal naughty bits under federal
control. ...but sadly, half of them have dropped out already.
