So, we talk about all kinds of stuff here, but I never really hear anyone talk about what they do for work. Some of us love what we do, and some of hate it, and a lot of us are indifferent. But I am alway interested in hearing what people do for a living.
Personally, I am a professional student. I just graduated with my undergrad in Geology from the University of Montana. I am headed for Boise State University in the fall, where I am have a teaching assistantship and will be pursuing a Master's in Geology. I am primarily interested in how mountain belts and continents form, which combines several disciplines, my interest and specialty being metamorphic petrology (study of the formation of metamorphic rocks). At Boise State I will be combining my current knowledge with geochronology (dating the formation of rocks) to better understand the timing of extension in North-Central Nevada. I would love to be a research geologist, but it is hard to get people to pay you to do that, and jobs with Universities and Geologic Surveys are extremely competitive, so I guess we will just have to see what happens on that front. I have worked previously doing client side computer support for 2 different colleges. I also worked for Home Depot as a Paint Associate. I have about 5 years of experience in both of those jobs, and don't really miss either one of them. So, tell us what you do and/or what you would prefer to be doing.

Nice thread. I too am always curious about people's professions. I am a High School Math Teacher. I teach mostly upper level classes including AP. Calculus. I have been doing this for the past 8 years and love it. There is something to be said about having your summers off. My wife also teaches so we just hang out and travel all summer with the little one (she is 3yrs old). By the way, I only have 3 weeks left

Nice one John. I started one of these over on legacygt as a poll, but it looks like I forgot to do the same here.
Personally, I'm a Mechanical Engineer by education and am lucky enough to actually be using my degree in my day job as an engineer for a materials handling manufacturer. I worked for 3 years designing custom machinery for customers which was fun, but ultimately a go-nowhere job so last year I transfered to another department & now design fixtures & machines for in-house use in production. I'm still designing some of our products, but eventually will be here solely to design, source & implement production equipment. As far as the I guess you can't have everything...at least, not at only 27.

Well... by degree I'm a computer programmer. I've programmed for 20 yrs in UNIX, & Windows using C, C++, VB, and .NET. However, I've also worked 10 yrs for an outdoor sporting goods shop selling skis, snowboards, roof racks, kayaks, and camping gear. The store is Bill & Paul's Sporthaus in Grand Rapids, MI www.billandpauls.com.
Now I've decided to take my career full-time into the outdoor sporting goods arena. I got laid off (again) from my last IT job in January, and since my wife was being promoted to the other side of Michigan, I went looking. I got very lucky and found my dream job in running the Don Thomas Sporthaus in Birmingham, MI. We sell skis, snowboards, racks, in-line skates, kayaks, clothing, and specialize in expert boot fitting for skiing, boarding, and skating. Right now I'm training at Summit Sports (www.summitonline.com) and will move to Don Thomas when they reopen in Sept. Check both stores out. Ask me anything. I'm here to help. I'm very knowledgable in Thule and Yakima products, as some of you already know...

I was talking to several other geologists about geography a few weeks ago, and we decided it shouldn't be a science of its own, that it was just a bastardization of sociology, geology, biology, anthropology, and just about anything else you want to pull out of a hat. j/k So we came up with a new name for the discipline: sociogeobiocartography

My BA was in Recreation Management from a great school in Washington State, and after 25 years, I got pretty tired of bats and balls (and whining adults). Two years ago, I completed my Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, and am now, you guessed it, a mental health counselor. Not sure what I will do next, but I am sure it will be just as fun.

WOW all awesome jobs . Mine is kinda boring .
I'm career emt and fire fighter in a South Jersey resort beach town. We do about 600 EMS calls a year and about 150 Fire calls per year. Most of the fire calls are false alarms . We usually only have 1 major fire a year. Our last major fire was in the winter of 03and 04 . We lost 45 million dollars worth of condo's on the north end of the island . Fire started on the exterior of one of the seven building with a 30 mph wind coming of the bay. We were on scene for about 3 days . Mike K |
