Default Outback vs. Passat wagon?

Hi!

Since my husband got a new job with a very long commute in a northeast city that does a terrible job at snow removal, and we're trying to add a baby to our family which includes a small dog, it seems time to trade in my trusty 1999 VW Beetle for something more practical.

I've always liked driving my dad's VW Passat wagon, but they don't make it in AWD anymore and it's more than I want to spend. I guess I could buy a used one but we like to buy new and keep cars for 10+ years. Plus after owning a VW for 11 years, I'm tired of how much it costs to fix even little things that go wrong.

Do you think that the Outback is relatively comparable - in terms of cargo room, rear seat room, fit and finish? I'd probably go for the 2.5 CVT Limited model, which I know wouldn't be as fast as the Passat V6, but I'm OK with anything that's not slower than the Beetle or my husband's newish Honda Civic.

Anyone driven both of these and can compare?
