i would really appreciate a little help...... my request is a tad urgent because i was hoping to close a deal on a new subaru outback 2.5i limited w/multimedia for my mother tomorrow; only one subaru dealer in the city where we live; as a sidenote, her current car is an outback which she bought in 99 and has only 60k km's on it;
including gst, we were quoted a price of 42.6k for the car; i would really appreciate if i could get some feedback on that price... i had a feeling we could get it lower so i was hoping to get an idea of how much subaru is discounting off of their cars currently so i go to suby canada website, they are discounting them 3000$ for a cash deal right off the bat!!!! our dealer told us nothing of that even tho we are paying cash; so the website price is 41500 which is lower than my quote... so obviously i can get it lower but by how much? i wold love to get some feedback from subaru owners and drivers in canada on this price and how much more of a discount can i reasonably ask for?; i am cvertainly not going to pay 42.6k; thanks; |

Hi miker2011,
You can definitely do better, but you need to push for it. I paid just under $41k (incl fees & 13% HST in Ontario) for a 3.6R Limited, and that was last month when the cash rebate was 'only' $2500. I negotiated another ~$2100 dealer discount on top of that to get it to the 'on the road' price above. I went for a 2011 model/colour that they had in stock - your dealer may not be as willing to discount as deeply if they have to source it. Lastly and most importantly, I never go into a dealership without being armed with their invoice price. Go to Car Cost Canada - Home Page and buy a package of reports (I think the minimum is 3) - trust me it is well worth it. The 3.6R's have ~10.5% dealer markup. I've never paid more than 4.5% over invoice for a new car from any dealer/manufacturer - some people can negotiate much lower but I'm not that good yet. I've had several cases (admittedly not with Subaru dealers) where as soon as I pull out the report they cave in and agree to 3% over invoice without any haggling. While you are at it, use your other reports to get the details on a couple of competitors (Mazda & Toyota have crazy good deals right now). Since you can't really play off different Subaru dealers, you could play off different manufacturers. Say "Toyota are offering $$$$ off AND 0% financing, so unless you can do better I'm buying a Venza" or something like that. In your case, has your mother been servicing her current Sube at that only dealer in town. If yes, then that's extra leverage for you i.e. the threat to buy from a different manufacturer would mean they would lose out on many more years profit for their service dept as well ... Cheers & good luck. |

thanks so much for the post, that really helps alot; lots of good advice but more than anything it gives me the confidence to go in and ask for a lower price..... based on what u r saying, i think we could even get it for 40k or maybe a tad less, taxes in, since she is getting the 2.5i version;
i spoke to the dealer today and mentioned the 3000 discount and he says "well yes we gave you that and now we are open to offers from you....."; that is such bs on his part b/c he said nothing if a cash discount yesterday; yes, we have been getting my mothers car serviced there so you are right i can use that as more leverage; my biggest concern now, as much as we want the subaru outback, revolves around the front end shimmying issue with the 2010-11 outbacks.... the salesperson said it was all fixed up and yadayadayada but i dont believe him.... i am concerned b/c i would hate to buy her a new car and then have to deal with this; i dont want to get into the shimmy in this threadb/c i know it has been dealt with before but we are cencerned; thanks again for your post, much appreciated; Quote:

Hey, we were pricing outbacks at our dealers and your price is close. We went with 2.5 CVT Limited. No Nav and the best price they could give us was 38800. That is Alberta. Kinda same sales pitch that you got from your dealer.....We ended up buying a US car. Believe it or not with all the paperwork it was worth it. We had talked to six local dealers and test drove cars at three of them and the overall experiance was the same. Subaru is offering a discount and that is all we can do blah blah blah.
Best of luck |

If you haven't bought yet, the 2012 are on their way to the dealers.I just negotiated on an Outback 2011 3.6R for $ 32,000 including incentives ,not incl. HST. A 2.5 LTD with no nav. would have been the same. Only problem that they are almost all gone here in BC so would cost more to bring them here or get it . I also priced a US one( 2012) but with exchange now it would cost a bit more than a 2011 here, and warranty issue.
