It's still a pretty lousy experience, but it's marginally better than all the pinch-zooming required to read the regular site in a mobile browser.

Well they seem to be updating at it at least, so I'm taking the chance. So far it's worked fine on the iPad.

If you find yourself needing to write a long post, do yourself a favor and write it in another app, then copy it and paste it into autoguide. It's very good at crashing partway through a post submission.

There were some updates to the plugin on the server today. Did it help with some of the crashing issues.

You don't post a question in the user cp, you'd post it on any of the forum sections. Is the question site related or car related?

Just out of pure curiosity, why was the decision made to remove Tapatalk functionality and go instead to the much inferior autoguide app? .. Did autoguide offer a subsidy to forums that use their server extension? .. Or did Tapatalk do something to agrevate forum owners? .. Just wondering.

The Autoguide app is a private labeled version of tapatalk. Autoguide gets some of the app purchase revenue and maintains control of the API used to access their sites.

I understand that the unbranded version of tapatalk has gained new features beyond the branded one, but I haven't used it so I can't be more specific. If you look in the Autoguide app package, you'll see that it was built from tapatalk 2.x.

I don't know if there is more to the deal than that.

Ok.. thanks for the information. ..

But, that still leaves me wondering why a forum owner would voluntarily switch to Autoguide? I assume they want the best mobile experience for their users - and that's clearly delivered by the Tapatalk app and not the Autoguide app - especially these days, where more and more people are accessing online content from their mobile devices, if not exclusively, a majority of the time.

A delicate balance. A good experience would also require careful coordination with the back-end server. I can appreciate how they would have an easier time maintaining that by owning the app and controlling the API used to communicate with the servers.

Also don't forget- what they really want is a good experience for their advertisers and data brokers. If the users have a good time too, that's gravy.

Not suggesting that the autoguide app is better in any meaningful way for us, but as a business owner I completely understand their reasons for doing it this way.

They've recently rolled out new mobile web skins for the site and others they own. Makes me wonder if they are planning to ditch app access altogether.

EDIT: Also just in case it wasn't clear before- this site (and hundreds of other model-specific car forums) are all owned by autoguide. This is why they wanted their own app. Using the same backend servers, APIs and client app doubtless saves them a bundle.
