It's a car ie wagon thats been sold to US consumers as a SUV. Does that answer your question? US marketing BS will make you think its a SUV but its a Legacy Wagon with a raised suspension.

In reality, It more like a Hybrid Wagon/Crossover SUV.
The Outback is supposed to be a a wagon and had been all these years. But the new 4th gen design with the raised/a generally beefed up suspension, taller body height and overall higher ground clearance fits it description and utility very well. Just the body's new look gives it a larger SUV appearance. But I guess a a design and form Subaru's standpoint, its a large wagon with a raised suspension. Again, previous years it was a wagon. Todays new styling gives it a Crossover SUV feel and appearance. With the 15mm sway bar, it behaves more as a SUV than a wagon. I mean what is a "Crossover" from a car/truck standpoint? Its a SUV body based on a car chassis with or without ground clearance. |

Prior to the 2010 redesign I would consider it a station wagon, the 4th gen I would consider a small SUV/CUV...same as an earlier Toyota Highlander.

Seriously....people debate this. Ignore marketing tactics....Outbacks are WAGONS. NOT SUVs, NOT MPVs, NOT crossovers. If you are too embarrassed by driving a wagon, then go buy/drive something else. Geez people....grow a pair!
It isn't even that unique. I'm sure there are some old farts that remember the AMC Eagle. Not the same formula, but same principle concept. Aussies have the Holden Commodore variants...I think they were called Crossman there (For US folks...think Cadillac Catera/aka CTS first gen and Pontiac GTO in four door form). In Europe some may call them an "Estate" I don't think they qualify as a 'shooting brake' as that entails the notion of performance. A LGT Wagon might...but still think not quite.

I read in the paper last week that Comsumer Reports named the 2011 Outback the best new minivan. No joke!
