Hey there gang!
I'm thinking of getting a previous gen Outback with a 3.0 engine, and the question is what are the things to look out for? These cars aren't really popular here in Azerbaijan. So far, I've viewed two. There's this one that has 53k kms on the clock, but i think the guy was kind of abusing it because the second set of tyres is pretty f.ed. When i test drove it, it was on Sport, so I'm not sure, either he was trying to impress me or he really is driving it in sport mode. Viewed the second one today, it had 60k km on the clock60. the only thing is they f.ed up the dash because of the Pioneer 2Din unit installation where the navi usually is and transfered the clock below the stereo just by the gear shifter. they've also installed a shitty car phone unit...don't know why, bluetooth units have been available for a decade now. you can take a look at both of the cars here: Turbo.Az - ??? ?? ??????????? ? ???????????? The 60k Outback had a much better leather, because the previous owner had seat covers on it and it looked like the paintjob was in a better condition. at those prices, im not sure, will have to check if these are available in Dubai for me to import it here. So the question of the day is, what are the things to look out for? is there a way to find out how often the car was driven in sport mode? I know it pry isn't possible, but in case you guys know something. |

as far as the engine goes, there's not really anything to look out for. listen to the engine before you get it to make sure you don't have any excessive metal scraping or tapping. the 3.0s don't have timing belts to worry about, but they do have timing chains. the chain followers are about the only thing that goes wrong and that would be indicated by sounds of metal.
the other thing to look for is the AWD system. you said on the first one that the tires are pretty f.ed. do you mean that they're all worn, or that just the fronts or the rears are worn. different size tires (even those that are the same size, but have been worn unevenly) can and will damage the AWD system. to test that simply drive in a couple of tight figure 8s and make sure the car doesn't take an excessive amount of throttle input to keep it moving. |

Thanks SovereignAxe.
I didnt look very close tbh, but i think all of them were worn. he said that stock tyres were a bit noisy so he swaped them with these and managed to have them worn in a short period of time. btw is it easy to roll back the odometr and are there ways to find out if that has been done? |

I wouldn't think so, since they're all digital odometers now...but I'm sure it's possible.
that said, that sounds like the right number of kms for that age of car. I believe that equates out to somewhere around 33k and 37k in miles. With a fairly soft compound tire, I can see them wearing out pretty heavily in that amount of time. |
