I am looking for a later model Outback (2000-2004). Most that I have seen on Craigslist are 3-4K. I have read about some issues with head gaskets. Would it be better for me to get one with 150-160K miles with no head gasket repairs done and no signs of oil leakage, or one with 200+ that has had new head gaskets and other repairs done. Prices are pretty much the same for each. I appreciate all the help I can get from your expertise and experience. Thank you!
Your budget doesn't allow for much, be careful roaming Craigslist for H6 Outbacks for that much money. I'd pick one with fewer miles, in general, than one with more. Lots of qualifications to that...but at least if it needed some work in the future, I'd know who did it.
Above aside, I would look for maintenance records and history. A higher mileage Outback with books and records would hold more appeal than one with little or no documentation. Look for private sellers...folks with the "extra" car in the driveway.
