I recently purchased a 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6 Limited. Love the car thus far but one part of the purchase has me befuddled.
We were crunched for time by the time we were closing our sale and were sold the Service Package and the Carepoint package that added just under $2k to our purchase price. We were told we could not purchase these later but could back out if we decided to so I did this with the plan to do more homework on this so that is what I am doing. Can you guys tell me if you also purchased either service plan or why you declined? This is our first Subaru and we typically keep cars a minimum of 8 years if that would factor into this. My understanding of the Service Package is EVERYTHING is covered at a dealership for the 5/60K period outside of oil changes, gas, and maint. items such as filters and wiper blades etc. Is this correct? Also, does this require certain maintenances that the typical owner usually passes over such as 15K mile service? The Carepoint package I understand even less so if anyone can fill me in on this one I would appreciate it. Anyway, I appreciate any feedback / real world experience with these service plans. Thanks |

The 5/60k warranty is for the engine and powertrain.
True bumper-to-bumper warranty is 3/36k. They have a 3/36k "wearables" warranty for a few items; brake pads and a small number of other items (I think 4 total). Nearly all of the extended warranty/service packages can be added later. The only thing that cannot be done later is adding it to your purchase and adding into your financing package (if any). Personally, I think I will get an extended warranty (properly noted as repair insurance) at some point because we do retain our cars for at least 100k miles. |

As for wiper blades...meh. They throw this in to look impressive. The truth is that these are covered under the 3/36 warranty anyway, and for $30 or less you can purchase much better than OEM wipers. Again, read the paperwork you were given by the dealer.

An extended warranty from Subaru is much closer to a true warranty than "insurance", which is what all 3rd-party extended warranties are. In the best case, all it does is push the end date of your warranty out by 44K miles.

It's still covered by your 3/36 bumper to bumper, and honestly I really don't care if Subaru pays for it or not because I'd rather buy better ones and take 5 minutes to install them myself.
