My wife drove the Forester first and thought she had found the car of her dreams. The Outback made the Forester look positively primitive in comparison in her eyes. She always watches the $$$ in our house, she didn't flinch at the difference, Outback hands down.

The Pilot was AWD? My old '84 Suburban is MUCH better in ice and some snow with 3/4 worn out tires than my '95 Suburban with brand new snow tires. It's weird. The '95 has positraction too, still feels like an empty pickup, just weird. Could the older one be that much heavier???

To each their own. You miss out on what you ignorantly choose based upon society's expectations of social status from financial means and possessions.

It's best to let ignorant people stay that way so they learn the hard way.
I was / have been decided on the forester for years, always loved them and always wanted one.

Having said that, I felt no need to post or as for comments about the forester though I did think about it.

Also: Just got back from Anchorage and we had rented a brand new 2012 D/caravan with 4800 miles. Was a nice ride at first till roads got slick, the traction control really sucked the life out of it and my wife having never owned a F/drive vehicle was not impressed with its performance in the city and through the pass in winter conditions.

It rode nice though had some odd noises over bumps as well as transmission surges and constant gear hunting. I could tell you all more however I will keep it simple and say we will never again drive one and my wife is all about the Subaru now.

Vehicle behaviour can be funny... I have a number of Suburban, and although I've got nothing new enuff to have Stab Control, they all have 4 wheel drive, but only usable on snow or slippery sufaces due to no center differential.

Anyways, we don't have much snow up here, but I just brought back a '95 3/4 ton Suburban from Phoenix, and put new aggressive "off road", AKA snow tires on, and it has less traction with a Posi differential than my '84 3/4t Sub with almost worn out summer tires and no posi. I will have them both weighed at truck inspection station one day to see if the newer one has a liter rear. It def has thinner steel (body) construction.

My bro bought a Toyota Venza recently, and his SC can be turned off by holding the button in.

We have been toying with the same question for about four months now...our plans were to buy the first of March if we ever made up our mind. Wanting to be practical and somewhat of a tight-wad I was leaning Forester

That being said, this past Tuesday we purposely went to the dealer and tried the Forester Touring one more time...then we dropped into a OB Limited...almost at the same time with in a second we both said this was our car. Then walking back to the office...there it sat, the color and equipment we wanted. Put a deposit down...end of story. Picked it up last night... a whole month early.

NEVER LOOKED BACK.

Around here the Forrester is about the same $$ as the OB, so that makes a choice quite simple IMHO. $30K for the XT or $31K for the OB 3.6 Limited is a no-brainer...Just my0.02 cts ..

I've had the luxury of 6 months to decide what I'm going to buy (extra cars while a kid is away). I also have been trying to decide. I drove:

-Rav 4
-Santa Fe
-Kia Sorento
-Forester (XT, NA stick and Auto)
-Outback (4 cyl stick and auto)
-CRV (2011 and 2012)
-Rogue
-Juke

The Subaru always stood out as the top choice, but deciding between Forester and Outback has been driving me nuts. I had originally planned on buying a forester XT, but the practical side of me just can't buy a car that needs premium and gets that kind of mileage.

After much though In the next month I plan on buying a Outback premium cvt. here's why:

- The fit and finish just feels better: padded door tops, two level center console that doesn't creak when you touch it.
- Mileage is exceptional (I drive approx 20K/ yr)
- Yeah I know it's slow, but I just came from a Toyota matrix AWD which is slower.
-on the minus side handling def feels better with the forester, and the forester sunroof is pretty cool.

On a side note, my brother an I went to the philly car show last night. We were laughing that every nice car was $50,000. The Outback really held it own with these cars, there was nothing else that came close in it's price range.

if ur planing on making the subaru faster, i would go for the forester, forester to me is more out of the box trail vehicle with the XT, the outback is more of a people mover, with the bigger room and bigger trunk, outback does of the 3.6h but i hear that engine does burns and leak oil later in life but i dont have one so i cant say for sure but just talking to the subaru of las vegas techs about the engine was all they kept saying, because i wanted one. also sat/nav and the remote start is weird, there some post i have read here kinda complain about it, but like i said cant take more word on it.

more of a fun car is the forester.

long trips, moving friends and family the outback
