That's why you are supposed to use side terminal batteries. Common problem that. Many a person has had the Beetle 'hot seat' experience.

WOW, that happened to my buddies beetle!! Werode the rest of the way home coasting down hill standing on the running boards with the doors wide open!! Those were fun times...

My dad had a 1974 Mercedes 240D that was on the road for 30+ years. It was well maintaned and seemed like it would run forever. Winter road salt cut it's life short...not mechinical failure. The body rotted out from around the motor. That's probably what will happen to my TDI too...I can only hope...
