Default extending warranty coverage

Can someone tell me of a reputable company that will provide good quality coverage after the car's manufacturer warranty is expired? I want a good company that doesn't play games and that will permit the use of my dealer for repairs and not require me to use some back-yard garage.
We keep getting various offers from different companies, don't know what's good and what's not.
Any and all input appreciated.

Anything besides a Subaru-backed warranty will typically not allow you to use a dealer unless there is NO other option. If it's for your 2008, you're well outside the 3 year B2B warranty, preventing you from getting the Subaru warranties.

Actually this is for my wife's 2009 Legacy GT.
The mother in law has a Legacy Limited, 2009 with 40,000 miles, that she bought used just about 4 months ago. The dealer sold her some extended warranty. Here just recently the converter shields came loose and were rattling real bad, that warranty she bought paid for the entire bill at the dealer where she bought it.
I asked her about the warranty, but of course she knows nothing about it....no details or anything. All she knows is that if the car breaks she takes it to the dealer and they fix it.
