I will mark the day in our calender when our Subaru's will get mileage like the (poorer made) VW diesel counterparts can get.
Check out these photo's that a fellow board member posted. Note the fuel economy on one tank (at least he claims). "805 miles on one tank. 13.4 gallons to refill. 60.08 MPG." ![]()

Looking forward to the new Subaru diesel too.
805ml for 13.4 (US)GAL = 60 (US)MPG or 3.92lts/100km! Very impressive and I have heard and experienced similar figures in these small diesel engined cars.

Hmm it'd be amusing as all **** to up the boost on one as well. I've always been interested in diesel technology and even considered swapping the VW straight 6 turbo diesel into my modified volvo 740. (volvo offered the engine in the 80's).

My Outback is my fuel economy vehicle! 22-23 around town, 26-29 highway (depnding on speeds)...that's great for me, and I'm happy!
But my perspective is a little skewed since I've had a couple vehicles over the past several years that sat in the low teens around town and the mid to high teens on the highway. But those Jetta TDIs are great for fuel economy...don't know that I'd want to go back to VW build quality again, but the fuel economy is fantastic. The best fuel economy car I've ever owned was an 89 Toyota Tercel. It was a bit of a penalty box...no AC, no stereo from the factory, manual windows, no cruise control. But I had to truly abuse it to get less than 30 mpg around town, typical highway mileage was around 40-42, and I managed to hit 53 mpg one trip.

However, it's not as good as my '93 Acclaim was. 30 MPG, consistently, every day. Sure the car was falling apart, and it used oil like nobody's business, but it got great mileage.

The good thing about an oil burner is both the economy but also the performance potential. Anything turbo charged is awefully fun!

And you can fit an awefull lot into it by folding down the rear seats. I took one on several trips to the hardware store. As long as you don't buy anything too long, just large and square. Well, relatively large. I've put in a softshell pond, many bags of sand, LOTS of bags of water softener salt, etc.

You had a Dakota? I've had 2. First was a 94 2WD Dakota Sport regular cab, 3.9L V6 and a 5-speed manual. It was the first vehicle I owned with AC and cruise control, and was a fun and very playful little truck. My second Dak was a 2000 4X4 extended cab 4.7L V8 with an automatic. I loved that truck. It started off very "suburban" looking, with two-tone green over gold paint. I decided I didn't like that look so I put a 3 inch lift on it, mud tires on black steel wheels, switched to 3.92 gears (3.55 was stock) and put spray-on bedliner material over the rocker panels, fender flares....basically the entire lower portion of the body. Also blacked out all the chrome on it with semi-gloss black paint & a clear coat over that. It looked great, and no worries about it getting scratched up from off-roading! I'm not a huge fan of the current body style of the Dakotas...they look nice, but I kinda prefer the second generation for extended or quad cabs, and the first generation looks great as a regular cab.
