I traded an 03 Hyundai ElantraGT with a 2.0 liter engine and a 5 spd MT. It had 77K miles on it and was running perfectly. It also got between 28mpg (local) and up to 34mpg (highway). I really enjoyed the vehicle because it had an amazing amount of standard equipment and great handling (I added a better rear sway bar and better tires) and, considering I paid $13,500 for it brand new it was a real "winner."
I had to trade it for my Subie (08 2.5i OB Wagon with 5sp MT) to get the AWD I needed to take me up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Alta and Snowbird ski areas pretty much on a daily basis. I am retired and ski nearly every day during the season. When there is significant snow UDOT restricts travel to vehicles with "Chains or AWD." Of course, there are still some occasional delays while they clear avalanches, or use explosives to set them off intentionally before allowing vehicle traffic. I have really come to like the Subie. Fuel economy runs around 25 - 32 mpg and it is very comfortable on long trips. BTW, I did a rear swaybar swap on this vehicle too. I just don't care for the "wallow" that stock swaybars seem to exhibit. I now have just over 20K miles on it, and since I do my own regular maintenance and repairs I am hopeful that it will give me many, many miles of dependable service. I tend to take my cars a long way. The vehicle I sold to buy the Hyndai was a 91 Honda Accord with 203K miles on it and it was still going strong. |

I gave up a 94 Toyota Corolla that only had 182k miles on it when the insurance company took it. **** accidents. I loved that car, love my suby better though.

I sold my 1996 VW Jetta Trek to buy my Outback. People can say what they want about VW's, but it was dead-nuts reliable and always got at least 30 MPG, usually 32. I had it lowered about 2 inched on stiffer shocks and springs, a large rear sway bar and had custom fitted some Mk2 Jetta GLI Recaro Seats with some other modifications.
Car handled like it was on rails and a blast to drive. Sold it to a fellow VW enthusiast from RI, as I wanted a new project, and it was starting to get some rust in places I didn't like. Wish I could have kept it as well, but I am happy with my decision. The old ride:

Well, this is my second Outback so it's a two-stage story.
I was driving a 1988-1/2 Escort that I got new, and I definitely got my money's worth out of it. I kept it when I got the 1998 Outback, and still used it for little running around tasks, while I saved the OB for more serious hauing. I kept it as it rusted through, (with the driver's door open, I could check the left front treadwear from the driver's seat) until the clutch broke at 217Kmi. Then I just had the 98 for a few years, until a Pathfinder ran a stop sign in front of it. I took the insurance money and bought the 96, and I've been happy with it.

I gave up a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. I got married and wanted something with more cargo room. My Jeep is still my favorite, but I do love my OBW and it more than solved my cargo room needs.

Gave up '91 Mitsubishi Montero. Great and a bulletproof tank. 17mpg. But qith a new baby on the way, the Subie made too much sense.
Always looking to get another Montero...
