I've got a 1998 subaru legacy outback wagon, engine went at 198,000 miles, been looking on internet for a rebuilt or reman, even found jdm's, there is so much out there that I don't know what would be the best route, I love this car and i want to get my moneys worth on whatever I choose to purchase, and i don't have a large cash flow, so I need some advice on what i should do that will give me the best long term fix available?

Hm....well a 2.2L engine swapped in is a popular route. If you get the right 2.2L and do the work yourself or have a shop willing to take it on you could be back on the road for maybe $200 to $1000. Watch out with the JDM engines, often you need the wiring harness and other parts as well.

are the heads OK on the old engine? You could consider a short block from a rebuilder like CCR.
