I'm interested in acquiring one of the OBDII scanners to work with my iPad/iPhone via WiFi connection. NOT bluetooth.
Something that will be plugged in when needed, not a permanent installation.
Do you recommend any particular unit, and a place to buy one? First hand experience, please.
What do you like/dislike about your chosen device? Would you buy it again, now that you have used it some amount? Any particular features especially useful?
Anything I should watch out for when choosing one?
I bought and later returned a kiwi plx. The problem may have been the iOS app I was using, never found out. After I complained to apple, the app vanished from the store.
Your phone would still get internet through the cellular radio. An iPad could still have internet via Bluetooth tethering, even if it wasn't equipped with a cellular radio.
MOST phones don't route data over the cellular connection if WiFi is connected. I know my Moto X (and previous HTC Thunderbolt) is this way. Easy to check, connect the phone to your home WiFi then unplug the cable between the modem and router. Do you still have internet?
I have a bluetooth low energy one, like it a lot. Very fast and no worry about draining car's battery since it is low energy print. The best part is that you can listening to Pandora simultaneously. If you search LELink on ebay you can see the scanner.
