We have a couple road trips planned this year in our new to us 2013 Outback (2.5) and we are taking my grandparents on one and my parents on another. So between a kid and the old folks I am sure we will need some additional cargo room. One trip is a 3400 mile loop from Utah up through the Pacific Northwest, the Redwoods, and the California coast. So we have luggage and a cooler and such. I have a Yakima Load Warrior that I know can go on the factory rack and a Rola Platypus bag that fits it perfectly and covers the luggage I used that last year on my Escape when we went to Canada. I also have a very nice Hitch Basket that I use on my F-250. I am hoping some members have experience with both of these and let me know which way I should go.
Roof Basket:
I know already works but I am wondering how much it will affect MPG. The load is centered between the axles to that is nice.
Hitch Basket:
I don't think this will affect the mileage at all, however I am worried about having 100lbs or so hanging on the back. The rack and the receiver I am having installed will handle it no problem but I am wondering about what it is going to do to the suspension. If it is going to handle badly with 2 adults and a kid in the back seat and then the added weight out behind the rear axle.
Anyone used a hitch basket? If so what did it do to the suspension and handling? I would rather go with that option but not sure how it is going to act.
