Default 05 Outback XT with radio interference/rear defrost problem.....

I have a 2005 Outback XT which I really like, but have had a few annoying issues with. There's the "ILL.5" that pops up on my odometer even when I haven't changed the illumination settings on the dash (despite what one dealer told me), and more recently (and more annoyingly) I've started to get interference on my radio (FM) whenever I turn the rear defrost on. I'm assuming this is some sort of grounding issue with the built in antenna in the rear window. I get pretty miserable reception in the AM band as well.

I took it to my local Subaru dealer who wants to replace the entire radio (car's out of warranty of course). Has anyone else had this problem? I really don't want to replace the radio if its not going to fix the problem, and I'm unconvinced they actually looked for any grounding issues.

Ah, check out this thread at legacygt.com:

http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showt...ighlight=ILL.x

Look at the underdog's link and scroll that link down where they mention it could be a faulty switch (that controls the dashboard illumination).

Can't help you with the radio interference though.

I have interference with the rear defrost when I am listening to Sirius. I installed the direct connection for Sirius and it helped. Sorry, no help for regular radio...
