Default diff fluid change

Hi, I would like to change the front and rear diff gear oil in my 2000 obw w/ all weather package. Does anyone have any pictures or can you help me locate the place to drain them. I have found information that says the front diff drains directly under where the dip stick is located. I dont see it. Anyone with time to help, thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. Do you have an auto or manual tranny?

Thanks for the reply Brian, My 2000 obw is an automatic. 146,000 miles & counting! Owned it for 1 year. I am able to change some of the fluids. Just not exactly sure what I'm looking at w/ the diff gear oil. I have no idea if diff oil has ever been changed. The car runs good. I am real confident the previous owner properly maintained the vehicle. The engine is clean and runs strong. I enjoy working on it and would love to do this task myself. If you have time and can provide some direction? Thanks again.

If you enjoy working on your Subie, I'd pick up a Haynes Shop Manual at one of the local auto stores. I picked one up and haven't been disappointed. They only run about $20.00 and you can refer to it for other routine maintenance items as well.

Just my two cents.

For the rear remember to take the fill plug out FIRST, because if you cant get it out after its already been drained your in trouble.

Good call on doing the mainteannce. You should find the soob to be a pretty easy to maintain vehicle. The rear diff you just need a 1/2" drive breaker bar or 1/2" male pipe plug socket. The plugs can be in there pretty tight, so some people use a floor jack to push on the breaker bar to get more force. I usually use an impact wrench with a pipe plug socket but it depends what you have available.

www.endwrench.com can be your friend, it hasl ots of free articles from Subaru about how to do various maitnenance, common issues, etc.
