Default Exhaust pipe -> Muffler gasket

Right, so I'm most of the way through grinding my way to a clean flange on my car exhaust pipe, so I can put my freshly dented and repaired muffler back on, and I realized, I have never heard whether or not you are supposed to put anything on those types of gaskets.

It is the one between the exhaust pipe and muffler, made of a strange fiberous material, with a crushable metal inner ring. Judging by the scraping (and noxious chemicals ) needed to remove the old one, I'm guessing nothing needs adding, but it can't hurt to ask the question.

The last gasket I dealt with was my motorcycle's crankcase cover (messing with the clutch) all it needed was a couple dabs of grease to hold it in place.

No, you shouldn't need anything other than the crush washer. Anything you would put on there would burn up in short order ... that's why it's made out of that strange material.

Well, after tedious grinding, the pipes appear to fit. Now to actually put the wagon through a workout, and make sure everything stays snug.

Now I'm ready for driving to TX in 2 weeks!

I did begin to wonder if the rust had permanently welded the bolt stud into the hole though...
