Default newbee with head/tbelt troubles

I have a 95 2.2with 170000 miles on it. I just changed the driver side head and put on a new timing belt. I lined up the crank and cam marks and installed the belt. It would not start. I checked compression, right side is 90 and left side is 120 with everything lined up according to the manual. When I was first taking it apart, I put the crank at TDC and saw the cam gear notches were pointing at 10 oclock, not 12. I didn't think anything of it because all the literature I have seen says to line the cam gears up at 12 when the crank gear is at TDC. Has anyone run across this before?

Thanks.

Here's an endwrench article on the 2.2 timing belt procedure.

So, are you sure you were on TDC on the #1 cyl ?

When you rotate the crank to TDC on #1 now, do the marks line up ? or no.

I believe all the 2.2 were non interferance so, it is possible that you have one cam off which would explain the difference in compression. The piston would not complete the stroke before the exhaust opened so, you wouldn't get full compression.

If that's the case, start over. Get it at TDC on #1 and line up the cams with the marks and see if that helps. If this happened in a 2.5 ... you would more than likely have bent valves so ... good thing you don't ;]
