Default Transmission solenoid clicking rapidly

Hi:

I recently purchased a 2001 Subaru Outback H6 VDC wagon with 93,000 miles. I installed a new shift assembly because it was difficult to move the shifter sideways (probably too many Cokes spilled on the console). Installing the new shift assembly was pretty straightforward, including adjusting the shift linkage.

While adjusting the shift linkage, I could hear a rapid "clicking" coming from the transmission. The clicking would occur only when the ignition key was on (engine not running) and the transmission was in gear. When the transmission was in neutral or park, there was no clicking. Also, there was no clicking when the key was off but transmission in gear. With engine running, I could not hear if the clicking was happening or not.

I'm assuming the rapid clicking is one of the transmission solenoids, don't know which one. I crawled under the vehicle while it was in gear but not running and I could hear the clicking coming through the transmission oil pan. I re-installed the old shifter to check if there was something wrong with the new shifter, and the clicking occurred with the older shifter also.

Is this clicking normal? What solenoid would it be?

Thanks

This is normal operation and nothing to really worry about.

That's good to know. I've never had any reason to have an automatic transmission in gear while engine not running before, so I just never noticed this before.

Thanks
