Question stalling

Hello,

Got a problem with my 2002 Ouback 2.5 stalling in the last couple of weeks. When I try to cold start it fires then stalls immediately. I have to hold the revs above 1000 rpm (stick shift) at all times. Occasionally this will go away after about 15 minutes driving but not always.

Thought I might have clogged a fuel filter and changed that. When changing (after relieving system pressure) I removed the hoses: the one coming in was fine but when I removed the downstream one I got a shot of high pressure gas that went right up the windshield. Someone indicated that this could be the fuel pressure regulator??

All other maintenance items up to date and no CEL.

Any input appreciated

Thanks

Just guessing but it sounds like the IAC is either not functioning or is clogged up. My reasoning is that you have to crack the throttle plate open for it to get air [when no throttle is applied, the IAC modulates the air going in at Idle].

I'm not sure if the IAC is still on the Throttle body for 02, if so, fairly easy to clean. Try that and post back

Thanks ETC, it is still located on the throttle body. I'll look at this tonight and get back to you.

That is exactly what was wrong. Cleaned it up and it runs just fine. No electronic issues so no CEL - just plain dirty.

Thanks ETC! If you are ever in Harrisburg, I owe you a beer.

Cool , Happy to see an "easy" fix for someone.

TZCHRIS- Try this

removing or cleaning IACV and Throttle body?

Or do a search for IAC or IACV cleaning and you'll get a few threads. The earlier IAC's were not on the throttle body but down to the side. I think you can still pull a hose and blast some cleaner through it and see if that helps, also check the plug .. make sure the pins are intact and clean.

There is a thread on here somewhere where we linked to several "diy" threads on other suby sites but, I didn't see it with a quick search.

TZCHRIS

I just used carb & choke cleaner. Saturated the part, let it sit for a while and wiped very carefully with a soft cloth. Kept doing this as long as the cloth picked up black deposits.

Good luck!

OK, Just got to cleaning the intake on my 98 Outback, try to follow along, I have 3 subarus, all 98's (2 outbacks & 1 forester) The outback I am rebuilding the engine but while I had the engine out I decided to strip down the intake and clean it up as well as new vaccume hoses. The manifold was filled with a layer of what looked like tar? Oily grimey gunk, with only 130K miles I was shocked. Had to send it out and it came back good as new. Here is the problem/question, If I am getting a CEL code that says the IAC or EGR is dirty or clogged I can only imagine what the intake looks like, and even if the IAC gets cleaned wont it just 'clog' up again unless the intake gets cleaned. The forester had 175K miles. Should I just bite the bullet now and take the whole intake off for a good cleaning? Also it would be nice to find something to clean the crap out of the intake, it seems the degreaser I was using would have taken about 10 cans to put a dent in it. I was considering soaking it in kerosene in a bucket for a couple of days?

Any help or coments will be great, thanks.
