so, I'm a 2 year owner of a 1996 subaru outback legacy. I've played with all the switches and knobs in the car since i've owned it, and know about the switch on the top of the steering column. So the question i have is, does anyone know where the parking lights relay is? The problem i'm having is my parking lights won't go off, no matter what position the parking switch is in, and when the car is off, there is an audible clicking like the relay is sticking or something. when the switch is off the parking lights flash, when on, they do not, but stay on. When the lighting fuse is removed, and the car is in start the parking lights will flash in tune with the clicking. when the fuse is in, everything is normal. even with the fuse out i have tried activating and de-activating the parking switch with no effect in all instances. can anyone help? ether with a diagram or pictures or something?

That sounds more like the security system causing the lights to flash. This often happens if the battery has been disconnected, or run down and recharged. Reason? Apparently, in that generation, the security system is programmed to consider a battery disconnection as an attempt to break in or steal the car. It signals this to the driver by flashing the lights, and yes, there's a relay that will be heard clicking in step with the lights.
There are threads here that refer to a button on or beside the security module (somewhere under the dash on the driver's side) that, when pressed, resets the system and clears the flashing lights. If you have the remote control (keyless entry lock/unlock) that should do it. Security System Issue: After Cleaning Battery lights are flashing |
