I am posting this because I would hate like heck for other OB owners to face this problem needlessly when doing a timing belt service. In 2014, I installed a Gates TCK307 kit in my 2006 OB 2.5. The car was at about 100,000 miles so the service was due. 18 months and 18,000 miles later, the engine grenaded when the tensioner bolt sheared off. The valves are bent etc so major repairs needed.
When I installed the kit, I used the new bolt supplied by Gates and torqued it to specification. The bolt sheared cleanly right where the tensioner mates to the bracket on the block. This can be seen in the attached pictures. I am left with a broken car, nearly a ruined family holiday (we were able to continue in our daughter's car), and thousands in repair bills and inconvenience, all for a lousy one dollar bolt! I am submitting a claim to Gates and will report on their response.
