Default Elapsed Time Display = "- - -"

Great forum here..have learned a lot about my new '06 Outback.

Problem: the Elapsed Time display in my OB works sometimes and other times I get " - - - " in the display. Not a clue why this is happening and the manual is no help.

All other functions on the display work fine.

Searched the boards here but have not found anyone with a similar problem. Hopefully it's just "the nut behind the steering wheel" as my Dad likes to say...

Any help is appreciated!

The time should count up anytime the engine is running. If the engine isn't running, or the key is not in the "ON" position, that might explain it.

If you're driving down the road...and it still says --:-- I dunno about that. First time I've ever seen that one reported.

Thanks, Random.

I should have said that the problem occurs when the engine is running...

I'm hooked on timing my trips now that I have the E/T display, so it's frustrating when I check it and get " - - -"

It's a glitch that also confused me for a while. You can solve this before starting your car by pausing your key in the "on" position (about 1 sec) before fully engaging the ignition. Works every time now.

How'd you ever figure that one out, ntak?

Internet search. Found the resolution at cars101.com under "updates."

I've had the same problem with E/T working sometimes and showing "--:--" othertimes when the car is running. I'll try the pause to see if it works.
