Default Cabin air filter

The owners manual of my '06 XT refers to an air filtration system (if equipped it says) in the Climate Control section.
Replace every 12 months-but shows you nothing. Is it hiding behind the glove box and if so, how to access?

These are good instructions for a 2nd gen (00-04) Outback: Subaru Outback pollen filter replacement

Not sure how similar the '06 would be, but it's worth taking the glove box off (easy to do) to see if anything looks the same. It could be identical.

2007 OBW Cabin Air Filter is for the 3rd generation and might be closer in the details to your 06.

A big 'THANK YOU' to OM. Your CliffsNotes in that link were golden.
The dang '06 has a double box and the partition you slide the filter through is too narrow. Looks like the '05 pulls out with half the work.
But with your notes and enough force it got done. I've pulled transmissions easier than that filter. And what a filter-six years old and alien life forms within!
A very satisfying day:
Coolant and thermostat change.
Oil and filter change.
Cabin filter change.
All without a hitch.
A pleasure to come here for help and guys like OM and others chip-in to help.
Thanks.
Looked at the sweat on that inboard axle end.....
