i have a 99 with the infamous 2.5 i ran into the head gasket issue and all that. i found a 2.2 from a 2003 impreza. both were used with auto trans. i understand i will need a new flywheel and maybe a intake inlet. but other than that will it bolt right up?

the easy answer is no.
1/ the 03 is a phase 2 engine and the 99 ej25 is a phase 1 engine. that line is really hard to cross. so don't bother, it is not worth it. 2/ they didn't make any ej22s in 03. 99 was the last year for the ej22 in the legacy and 00 was the last year for the impreza. (it might have been 00 and 01 but i don't think so.) so no, the non existant 03 ej22 will not work in your 99 car. neither will the 03 ej25 for that matter. there is a chance you could use the short block from an 03 ej25 with your current 99 ej25 heads, and intake. you can use any ej22 from 95 - 98 as long as it has the needed EGR and you get the matching exhaust y-pipe , if needed. (95 will not need it, 96 - 98 will.) |

if it's a 99 Forester or Impreza RS then the swap is possible and easy. if it's a 99 OBW or Legacy then it's not...well not without some extensive work arounds.
